Chapter 11 - The Roadblock

The tires of the unmarked sedan screeched loudly against the asphalt, burning rubber as Adrian wrestled the steering wheel to the left, bringing the car to a violent, shuddering halt barely three feet from the side of the massive semi-trailer blocking the highway.

The forest canopy swallowed the moonlight entirely here, plunging the stretch of road into absolute pitch-blackness save for the harsh glare of the semi's idling diesel headlights cutting horizontally across the empty tarmac.

Clara gasped, throwing her hands up instinctively to brace against the dashboard as her bruised shoulder collided painfully with the seatbelt. "Adrian! What is this? Is it a roadblock?"

Adrian did not answer immediately. His military instincts flared to life, his dark eyes scanning the dense tree line on either side of the road with predatory focus. The engine of the semi-truck rumbled with a deep, menacing vibration that rattled the windows of the sedan. No hazard lights were blinking. No driver was visible in the cab.

"It's not a roadblock, Clara," Adrian said quietly, his voice dangerously controlled as he reached down to unbuckle his seatbelt. "Stay in the car. Lock all four doors, and do not roll the windows down for any reason."

"Adrian, no! Don't get out!" Clara cried out, grabbing his arm with trembling fingers. "It's a trap! Look at the trees—someone is out there!"

Before Adrian could reply, the driver's side window of the sedan exploded inward with a sharp, deafening pop as a heavy steel crowbar smashed through the tempered glass, raining a shower of tiny diamond-shaped shards across Adrian's lap and shoulders.

A gloved hand reached furiously through the broken frame, hooking its fingers into the collar of Adrian's white uniform shirt in an attempt to drag him out into the night.

Adrian did not panic. With lightning-fast precision born of close-quarters combat training, he caught the attacker's wrist, twisting the arm upward with brutal torque until a sickening crack echoed inside the cabin, followed by a muffled shriek of pain from the darkness outside.

Adrian shoved the injured attacker backward, kicking the car door open with enough force to slam it into the invisible assailant hiding in the shadows. He scrambled out of the vehicle, his boots hitting the asphalt as he immediately engaged a second masked figure lunging toward him with a heavy iron pipe.

Clara pressed her back against the passenger seat, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps. Through the shattered window, she watched the brutal, silent struggle unfold under the harsh glare of the semi's headlights. Adrian moved with ruthless efficiency, ducking a wild swing of the pipe before delivering a devastating palm strike to his opponent's sternum, dropping the man instantly to the pavement.

Suddenly, the passenger side door of the sedan was wrenched violently open.

Clara screamed as a third masked man reached inside, grabbing her by the collar of the cream-colored silk robe and hauling her out of the vehicle onto the cold asphalt before she could even reach for the door handle.

"Let her go!" Adrian roared, turning away from his fallen opponent and sprinting toward the passenger side.

The masked man pressed the cold, metallic barrel of a suppressed pistol directly against Clara's temple, freezing Adrian in his tracks ten feet away.

"Step back, Captain," a harsh, raspy voice commanded from behind the mask. "Hand over the duffel bag containing the flash drive, or the girl takes a bullet right between the eyes."

Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. His chest heaved as he raised his hands slowly to shoulder height, his eyes locked onto the shivering, bruised face of his wife.

"Don't do it, Adrian," Clara whispered through her tears, her voice remarkably steady despite the gun pressed against her head. "The drive is encrypted. Even if they take it, they can't open the files without your biometric code."

The gunman pressed the barrel harder against her temple, drawing a sharp hiss of pain from Clara. "Shut your mouth, bitch, or I'll scatter your brains across this asphalt right now."

Adrian's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He slowly lowered his right hand toward the canvas duffel bag sitting on the passenger seat of the sedan.

"I'm giving you the bag," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register. "But if you leave a single scratch on her, I will hunt down every last one of you until there is nothing left of your syndicate."
