Chapter 4 - The Midnight Injunction

Eleanor stood framed in the archway of the master bedroom, the deep maroon silk robe catching the dim hallway light like dried blood. She did not look like a grieving widow or a panicked matriarch; she looked like an executioner who had just received final confirmation from the king. In her right hand, she held a crisp, heavily stamped legal document, the red ribbon sealing the top corner gleaming under the recessed ceiling lights.

Adrian planted his feet firmly on the carpet, his broad shoulders blocking Clara from Eleanor's direct line of sight.

"You are wasting your time with emergency injunctions, Mom," Adrian said, his voice flat and controlled. "The federal audit of the family foundation was filed three days ago. The moment the local sheriff sees those bank routing numbers, this entire house, the accounts, and your precious art collection will be frozen pending a federal review."

Eleanor did not flinch. Instead, a cold, predatory smile touched the corners of her thin lips. She took two slow, measured steps into the bedroom, her bare feet making no sound on the heavy wool rug.

"Federal audit, Adrian?" Eleanor asked softly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "You always were ambitious, thinking a few months at the Pentagon made you an expert in corporate compliance. But you forgot one very important detail about how things work in this family." She flicked the corner of the stamped document with her long fingernail. "This isn't a local injunction. This is a court-ordered psychiatric hold and asset freeze—signed by Judge Harrison himself, issued specifically against Clara for erratic behavior and destruction of estate property."

Clara stepped out from behind Adrian, her face pale. "That's completely illegal. I haven't destroyed anything. Your foot was on my hands in that basin!"

Leo popped his head over his mother's shoulder, still holding his smartphone high. "The security cameras in the living room only record audio, Clara. And the microphones near the fireplace picked up you screaming threats about burning the east wing down. Sounded pretty erratic to me."

Adrian's head snapped toward Leo, his eyes narrowing to dangerous slits. "You edited the audio file."

"I enhanced the archival recording for clarity," Leo corrected smoothly, flashing a toothy grin at the camera lens. "Standard family safety protocol."

Eleanor raised her hand, silencing her younger son with a flick of her wrist. She turned her icy gaze back to Adrian, her expression hardening into absolute steel.

"You have two choices, Captain," Eleanor said, using his military title like a demotion. "You can leave your little charity case here in the care of the county psychiatric transport team waiting at the front gates, or you can walk out of this house alone right now and let the family handle her legal rehabilitation properly."

Adrian looked down at Clara. The bruises on her face seemed to glow in the amber lamplight, a silent testament to years of systematic abuse masked as high-society discipline. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone, avoiding the broken skin with practiced tenderness.

"Pack the bag, Clara," Adrian whispered, ignoring his mother completely.

Eleanor's smile vanished. She snapped her fingers twice, and the heavy sound of heavy boots echoed up the stairs from the grand foyer below.

Two men in dark gray private security uniforms appeared behind Eleanor in the hallway, blocking the only exit with identical expressions of cold indifference.

"I gave you a direct order, Adrian," Eleanor hissed, her voice rising in volume for the first time. "Do not force me to have my own son physically removed from his father's estate."

Adrian slowly turned around, squaring his shoulders as he faced the two security guards. He reached inside his dress uniform pocket, pulling out a small, encrypted flash drive, and held it up between two fingers.

"If either of these men touches us," Adrian said quietly, "the digital keys to the offshore accounts go straight to the DOJ inspector general before you reach the bottom of the stairs."
