Chapter 6 - The Iron Gate

The heavy oak front doors swung outward into the cool midnight air, revealing the sprawling gravel driveway bathed in the harsh, white glare of security floodlights. The manicured hedges cast long, jagged shadows across the path leading toward the wrought-iron estate gates half a mile down the drive. Parked just beyond the perimeter fence sat a sleek, unmarked black sedan with its engine idling, exhaust plumes rising like ghostly specters into the crisp autumn wind.

Clara shivered, pulling the cream-colored silk robe tighter around her slip dress as the wind bit sharply into her bruised skin. Adrian sensed her discomfort instantly; he shrugged off his heavy military dress jacket—exposing the crisp white uniform shirt underneath—and draped it gently over her shoulders. The fabric still carried the faint, comforting scent of cedar and starch, wrapping her in an unexpected cocoon of warmth.

"We aren't going to make it to the highway on foot," Clara murmured, her eyes scanning the empty driveway for any sign of a vehicle. "Eleanor disabled all the estate cars through the master app on her tablet. Even if we walk to the gates, they'll lock automatically the second we cross the sensor."

"They're already locked," a deep voice ranted from the darkness beside the towering stone pillar.

Step by deliberate step, a tall man in a dark trench coat emerged from the shadow of the weeping willow tree near the porch. He flashed a polished silver badge under the glare of the floodlights, revealing the seal of the Department of Justice Inspector General's Office.

"Captain Vance," the federal investigator said, nodding respectfully toward Adrian. "I'm Agent Miller. We received your digital transmission twenty minutes ago. The automated asset freeze on the estate accounts went into effect across all three state districts the moment you hit send."

Eleanor's voice suddenly pierced the night air from the second-floor balcony above them.

"Agent Miller!" she screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered as she leaned over the wrought-iron railing in her maroon robe. "That man is harboring a mentally unstable fugitive! Arrest them both under federal trespassing and extortion codes!"

Agent Miller did not even bother looking up at the balcony. He simply pulled a thick manila folder from under his coat, flipping open the cover to reveal a series of signed arrest warrants and financial seizure notices.

"Eleanor Vance," Agent Miller called out into the darkness, his voice echoing authoritatively across the lawn. "You are formally summoned to appear before the federal magistrate at eight o'clock tomorrow morning regarding the misappropriation of three point four million dollars in veteran relief funds."

Leo appeared on the balcony beside his mother, holding his smartphone up like a shield. "This is fake! My lawyer is calling the governor right now! You can't do this without a local magistrate's signature!"

Agent Miller smirked, tapping the federal seal on his folder. "Local magistrate Judge Harrison recused himself ten minutes ago when we presented him with his own offshore bank statements linked to your mother's foundation."

Clara watched the color drain from Eleanor's face in the harsh floodlight. The matriarch gripped the balcony railing so hard her knuckles turned stark white, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly like a fish out of water.

Adrian took Clara's hand, his thumb stroking her palm as he guided her past the federal agent toward the idling black sedan parked just outside the property line.

"It's over, Clara," Adrian whispered softly, the heavy weight of his military posture finally softening as he looked down at her. "We're free."

Clara exhaled a breath she felt like she had been holding for three agonizing years. She slid into the passenger seat of the sedan, the plush leather interior smelling faintly of rain and coffee. Adrian closed the door gently, walking around to the driver's side to slide behind the wheel.

As Adrian put the car in drive and stepped on the accelerator, he glanced in the rearview mirror one last time.

Standing alone at the front steps of the sprawling mansion, Eleanor raised her trembling hand, pointing a single, shaking finger at the departing vehicle while her lips formed a silent, terrifying vow.
