Chapter 3 - The Unlocked Door

The heavy brass doorknob rotated through a full ninety degrees with a dry, mechanical click that sounded entirely too loud in the silent bedroom. The door creaked open an inch, revealing a sliver of the dark hallway outside where the wall sconces had mysteriously been extinguished. A cool draft swept into the room, carrying the faint, unmistakable scent of vintage rosewater and expensive cigarette smoke—a scent that belonged exclusively to Eleanor.

Clara gasped softly, retreating a half-step until the back of her knees hit the edge of the mahogany vanity. She gripped the cold surface for support, her eyes fixed on the widening gap between the door and the frame.

Adrian did not flinch. His military training instantly overrode the momentary shock, his posture straightening into rigid readiness. He stepped smoothly across the Persian rug, placing himself directly between Clara and the entrance. His right hand hovered near his side, instinctively searching for the service weapon he had dutifully checked into the armory before coming home for the weekend. Finding only the soft fabric of his trousers, his fingers curled into a hard, white-knuckled fist.

The door swung fully open, revealing not Eleanor in her maroon robe, but nineteen-year-old Leo.

The teenager stood in the doorway with his smartphone raised high, the front-facing camera glowing with a harsh, eerie blue light that cast long, distorted shadows up his face. A smug, self-satisfied grin pulled at the corners of his mouth as he stared directly past Adrian at Clara.

"Mom wants to know if you're packing your designer clothes or just the cheap rags you wore when you moved in here," Leo said, his voice dripping with practiced condescension. He tilted the phone slightly to the left, ensuring the recording angle captured the bruises on Clara's face and the open duffel bag on the floor. "She said if you take anything bought with family funds, she's calling the sheriff for grand larceny before you even reach the property gates."

Adrian exhaled a slow, controlled breath, letting his shoulders drop slightly from their combat-ready tension. But the anger in his eyes burned hotter than before.

"Turn the phone off, Leo," Adrian said quietly, his voice carrying a dangerous, low rumble that made the younger boy hesitate for a fraction of a second.

Leo lowered the device slightly, though the red recording indicator continued to pulse on the screen. "Relax, big brother. I'm just documenting the household inventory. Mom's lawyer advised us to keep a complete digital record of all departures. You know how litigious things get when unvetted outsiders try to claim squatters' rights on estate property."

"Unvetted outsider?" Clara repeated, stepping out from behind Adrian, her voice surprisingly steady despite her trembling hands. "I signed a legal marriage certificate in front of a judge and two hundred witnesses, Leo. Your mother can rewrite history in her diary, but she cannot rewrite the county courthouse records."

Leo laughed, a high, nervous sound that lacked genuine humor. He took a step backward into the hallway, raising the phone higher again as footsteps began to ascend the staircase behind him.

"Keep telling yourself that, Clara," Leo sneered, backing away into the shadows. "The judge in this county plays golf with our family every single Saturday. Good luck finding a lawyer willing to take a case against the estate."

Before Adrian could lunge forward to grab the phone, a tall silhouette materialized at the top of the stairs, blocking the hallway entirely.

It was Eleanor, holding a folded legal document in her hand.
