Chapter 9: Uncovering the Meridian Files

The afternoon sun cast long, amber rectangles across the Persian carpet in the master study. With Eleanor gone and the police investigation underway, Julian finally had the uninterrupted quiet required to comb through the digital files left behind on Eleanor’s personal laptop. He sat at the massive mahogany desk, scrolling through endless spreadsheets, encrypted email chains, and corporate registries associated with Meridian Holdings.
The corporate structure was remarkably complex, designed to obscure the ultimate beneficiary. Yet, as Julian dug deeper into the subsidiary accounts, a startling pattern emerged. Meridian Holdings was not merely a private acquisition firm; it was a front organization established to siphon funds from Vance Enterprises—Julian’s own family corporation—into high-risk international real estate speculations in the Cayman Islands.
Eleanor had not just been stealing from their personal savings; she had been systematically embezzling corporate capital using forged board signatures and manipulated compliance reports. Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. The scale of the betrayal was staggering. It wasn't simply a desperate mother seeking independence; it was a calculated corporate crime syndicate operating from within his own household.
His phone buzzed sharply against the desk. The caller ID displayed Arthur Pendelton’s private office number. Julian swiped the screen and brought the phone to his ear.
"Julian," Arthur’s voice came through, brisk and professional. "We’ve just received notification from the district attorney’s office regarding the financial documents you delivered this morning. The forensic accounting team ran the initial numbers on Meridian Holdings. This goes far beyond family court jurisdiction. We are looking at federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate forgery."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples with his free hand. "Can she be prosecuted federally?"
"Without a doubt," Arthur replied gravely. "The D.A. is preparing an expanded indictment. The evidence is airtight. Furthermore, this completely invalidates any claim she might make for alimony or asset division in the upcoming divorce proceedings. Her aggressive behavior toward you and the child last night, combined with this level of corporate fraud, paints a very clear picture for the judge."
"What happens next?" Julian asked, staring out the window toward the distant stables.

"She’s scheduled for an arraignment tomorrow morning at ten. Her defense attorneys are already scrambling to file for a psychiatric evaluation, claiming stress-induced paranoia, but given the paper trail, it won't hold up in federal court," Arthur explained. "Julian, I strongly advise you to secure a personal security detail for Oakwood Manor. If she realizes the extent of the federal charges coming her way, desperation might drive her to unpredictable actions."
"I’ve already handled security," Julian said firmly. "Elena and Leo are safe. Nothing gets in or out of this estate without my clearance."
