Chapter 3: The Sanctuary Behind the Nursery Door

Down the hall, inside the nursery, the air was warm and smelled faintly of lavender and baby powder. Elena sat in the plush rocking chair by the bay window, gently swaying back and forth. The baby, a robust six-month-old named Leo with tufts of fine brown hair, was fast asleep against her chest, his tiny chest rising and falling in steady, peaceful rhythm. Elena’s hands were steady, but inside, her heart was racing. She had suspected something was wrong for weeks. The baby’s uncharacteristic lethargy, the peculiar smell of the formula on certain evenings, the way Eleanor always insisted on preparing the final feeding herself—all of it had raised quiet alarm bells that a professional nanny ignores only at her own peril.

A soft, three-tone knock echoed against the nursery door. Elena tensed, but recognized the distinct cadence. It was Julian.

She stood up carefully, transferring the sleeping infant to his crib with practiced, gentle movements, ensuring he remained undisturbed. Walking across the soft rug, she turned the brass doorknob and pulled the door open a few inches. Julian stood in the dimly lit hallway, his tie slightly loosened, his expression heavy with fatigue.

"Is he sleeping?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes peering past Elena into the dimly lit room.

"Yes, Mr. Vance. He settled down almost immediately," Elena replied, keeping her voice low and even. "He’s breathing normally. No fever, no unusual signs."

Julian closed his eyes for a moment, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Thank God. Elena... I need to apologize to you. For what you walked into out there. For not seeing what was happening sooner."

"You don't owe me an apology, sir," Elena said gently, her Hispanic accent softening the formal words. "My job is to protect Leo. Today, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do that. Mrs. Vance... she was very angry when I tried to take the bottle."

"She won't be a danger to him anymore," Julian said, his voice hardening with resolve. "I’ve locked the master study. She’s in there now while we figure out the next steps. But I need to ask you something important, Elena, and I need complete honesty."

Elena tilted her head slightly, her braided hair shifting over her green apron strap. "Of course, Mr. Vance. You know you can trust me."

"Have you noticed anything else unusual over the past month? Anything involving my wife’s behavior, visitors, phone calls, or financial records that didn't make sense?" Julian asked, leaning slightly against the doorframe.

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her mind racing back through the past few weeks of employment at Oakwood Manor. "There were... certain things. Mrs. Vance received several large courier deliveries to her private studio instead of the front office. And she spent hours on the phone late at night speaking in a very low voice about an account in the Cayman Islands. I thought it was just corporate stress. But after seeing what happened tonight..."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "Cayman Islands? We don't have corporate accounts there. Eleanor resigned from her CFO position six months ago."
