Chapter 13: The Courthouse Steps

The morning sun reflected brilliantly off the polished granite pillars of the federal courthouse downtown. A phalanx of media reporters and camera crews crowded the steps, shouting questions and flashing camera bulbs as various legal teams and defendants arrived for the high-profile morning dockets.

A sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. Julian Vance stepped out first, dressed in his immaculate navy suit and red tie, his expression composed and resolute. Behind him stepped Arthur Pendelton, carrying a thick leather briefcase, followed closely by local police liaison officers. As flashbulbs popped around them, Julian did not pause or answer shouted questions; he maintained a steady, purposeful stride toward the heavy brass doors of the courthouse.

Ten minutes later, another black vehicle arrived. Eleanor Vance emerged from the back seat, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys. She wore a severe charcoal pantsuit, her red hair pulled into its signature tight bun. The red mark on her cheek had faded to a faint yellowish bruise, barely concealed by makeup. Her expression was a mask of cold, defiant composure, though her eyes darted nervously toward the chaotic media mob before her attorneys quickly ushered her through the security checkpoint.

Inside the soaring, marble-columned courtroom, the atmosphere was solemn and hushed. Federal Judge Harrison Taylor sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, his expression grave as he reviewed the thick case file resting before him.

"We are here for the arraignment in the matter of United States versus Eleanor Vance, alongside emergency family court custody and guardianship proceedings," Judge Taylor announced, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom.

Arthur Pendelton rose first, presenting the comprehensive financial audit logs from Vanguard Capital, the bank statements from Meridian Holdings, the medical report from Dr. Vance detailing the chloral hydrate sedative, and the definitive high-definition security footage from Oakwood Manor.

"Your Honor, the evidence presented demonstrates a systematic pattern of corporate fraud, felony embezzlement, and severe child endangerment," Arthur stated firmly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "We are requesting permanent sole custody of the minor child granted to Mr. Julian Vance, alongside immediate federal indictment and pre-trial detention without bail given the clear flight risk demonstrated by offshore account transfers."

Eleanor’s lead defense attorney stood up to object, stammering something about stress-induced medical episodes and psychological evaluations, but Judge Taylor cut him off with a wave of his hand.

"Counsel, I have reviewed the video footage of the defendant administering a respiratory depressant to her six-month-old infant, alongside the multi-million-dollar offshore asset transfers," Judge Taylor said coldly. "The motion for permanent sole custody is granted. The request for pre-trial detention without bail is approved. Court is adjourned."
