Chapter 5: The Emergency Consultation

The digital clock on the mahogany desk read 2:15 AM. The house outside was wrapped in a heavy, unnatural stillness, but inside the study, the air crackled with tension. Julian sat at the desk, his phone on speaker, listening to the steady, resonant voice of Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner at Vance & Associates Family Law and longtime family legal counsel.

"I need to hear that again, Julian," Arthur said, his tone measured and grave through the tiny speaker. "Are you telling me you have video evidence of your wife administering an unauthorized, controlled sedative to your six-month-old child?"

"I have the security footage from the landing camera," Julian confirmed, his voice devoid of inflection. "And she admitted to it verbally just moments ago in my presence. She claimed it was a micro-dose to ensure uninterrupted sleep for her business calls, but the pediatrician confirmed it was a respiratory depressant."

A heavy sigh echoed through the phone line. "This changes everything, Julian. Under state law, this constitutes severe endangerment and child abuse. If we file for emergency sole custody tomorrow morning, the family court judge will grant an immediate restraining order and temporary removal. But you must understand the gravity of this path. Once this enters the legal system, there is no turning back. It will become a matter of public record."

Julian glanced toward the heavy oak door. Eleanor was currently confined to the guest suite down the corridor, her phone confiscated, her movements monitored by private security stationed outside. "I don't care about public record, Arthur. I care about my son. What happens to Eleanor legally?"

"If prosecuted to the full extent, she faces felony child endangerment charges, potentially leading to prison time," Arthur replied without hesitation. "However, given her prominent social standing and lack of prior offenses, her defense team will likely push for psychiatric evaluation and a plea deal involving supervised visitation. But Julian, as her husband, you hold considerable leverage in how aggressively the district attorney pursues this."

"I want her away from Leo," Julian said firmly. "Permanently. I will not have my son raised by someone capable of drugging him for convenience."

"Understood," Arthur said. "Meet me at my downtown office at eight o'clock sharp. Bring the hard drive with the security footage, the bank statements regarding Meridian Holdings, and Dr. Vance’s written medical statement. I’ll have the emergency custody petition drafted and ready for filing before the courthouse opens at nine."

Julian clicked the end call button and buried his face in his hands. The weight of the impending storm pressed down on his shoulders. He had married for love, built a home for happiness, and now found himself preparing to dismantle his family to protect an innocent child.
