Chapter 10: An Unexpected Visitor

The evening shadows were lengthening across the manicured lawns of Oakwood Manor when the intercom at the front security gates buzzed insistently. Julian, sitting in the study reviewing the final corporate audit reports, pressed the desk intercom button to connect with the gatehouse guard.

"Mr. Vance, we have a visitor at the main gate," the guard’s voice crackled through the speaker. "A woman identifying herself as Dr. Sarah Lin, Eleanor’s former business partner from Vanguard Capital. She insists she has urgent information regarding the Meridian Holdings accounts."

Julian frowned, tapping his pen against the blotter. "Did she schedule an appointment?"

"No, sir. She said she drove up from New York unannounced because she couldn't reach Eleanor by phone and heard about the police involvement this morning."

"Let her in," Julian commanded. "Bring her directly to the foyer. I'll meet her there."

Ten minutes later, the heavy front doors opened, and a tall, poised woman in her early forties wearing a tailored gray trench coat stepped into the foyer. Her dark hair was cut into a sharp bob, and her expression was a mix of professional concern and nervous apprehension. She stopped near the wood-paneled wall beneath the American flag, waiting patiently as Julian descended the grand staircase.

"Mr. Vance, thank you for seeing me on such short notice," Dr. Sarah Lin said, extending a hand as Julian reached the bottom of the stairs. "I know this is a terribly difficult time for your family, but when I heard the news about the police involvement and the freeze on Meridian Holdings, I knew I had to come forward."

Julian shook her hand firmly, gesturing toward the master study. "Come inside, Dr. Lin. Let’s talk in private."

Once inside the quiet study with the door closed, Julian motioned for her to take a seat across from the mahogany desk. "You mentioned Meridian Holdings. What is your connection to that firm?"

Sarah Lin crossed her legs neatly, resting her leather portfolio on her lap. "Eleanor and I founded Vanguard Capital six years ago before she stepped down to have Leo. When she approached me three months ago about investing in Meridian Holdings, she claimed it was a joint venture to secure independent capital outside your family corporation."

"And you believed her?" Julian asked, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"At first, yes," Sarah admitted, her voice dropping lower. "Eleanor was always exceptionally persuasive. But two weeks ago, I discovered she was falsifying compliance documents, routing funds through offshore accounts without board approval. When I confronted her, she threatened to ruin my reputation in the financial sector if I exposed her. She was entirely consumed by a manic need for control. She believed everyone was trying to marginalize her."

Julian listened in silence, the puzzle pieces finally snapping into place. "She wasn't just stealing from our family, Sarah. She was building an empire on deception."
