Chapter 14: The Return to Oakwood Manor

The black sedan pulled through the iron security gates of Oakwood Manor late that afternoon. The estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon, the manicured lawns and towering oak trees standing as silent, unchanging sentinels against the passing of the storm.
Julian stepped out of the car, breathing in the fresh, crisp air. The heavy weight that had pressed down on his chest for days had finally lifted. Inside the grand foyer, the American flag still hung proudly against the wood-paneled wall—a symbol of enduring strength and stability.
Elena walked down the grand staircase, holding little Leo in her arms. The baby was awake, cooing softly and reaching out with chubby fingers toward a ray of sunlight streaming through the arched window.
"Welcome home, Mr. Vance," Elena said softly, descending the final step with quiet grace.
Julian walked over, gently brushing his son’s fine brown hair with his fingertips. Leo smiled, wrapping his tiny hand around Julian’s index finger with surprising strength. A genuine, unburdened smile spread across Julian’s face for the first time in months.
"Home," Julian repeated, the word carrying a new, profound meaning. "How was he today?"
"He slept through his nap, ate all his formula without any fuss, and spent an hour laughing at his mobile," Elena reported, her eyes warm with professional satisfaction. "Everything is back to normal, sir."
"It’s not just normal, Elena. It’s better," Julian said, looking around the spacious, sunlit foyer. "The legal proceedings are settled. The federal court upheld the permanent custody ruling this morning, and the divorce petition has been filed uncontested. Eleanor will remain in federal custody pending trial."
Elena nodded slowly, adjusting the baby wrap against her green apron. "It is a heavy resolution. But it is a just one. Leo is safe, and that is what matters above all else."
"You played a monumental part in that safety, Elena," Julian said, his tone deepening with sincere gratitude. "I’ve spoken with Arthur Pendelton this morning. We’ve drafted a permanent employment contract for you as head of household management and senior childcare director at Oakwood Manor, with compensation that reflects your true value to this family."

Elena blinked in surprise, a bright, genuine smile breaking across her face. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. That means more to me than you know. My mother in Madrid will be so relieved when I tell her that stability has finally found us."
Julian walked toward the study, feeling the quiet strength of the house surrounding them like a protective shield. The dark chapter had closed, leaving behind a renewed sense of purpose, peace, and hope for the future.
