Chapter 9 - The Vanishing Asset

Special Agent Thomas snatched the tablet from the junior officer's hands, his eyes scanning the glowing screen with growing disbelief. The fluorescence of the display reflected off his glasses as he scrolled rapidly through a series of updated financial logs.
"What do you mean it bounced?" Thomas demanded, looking up from the screen. "The wire confirmation was verified by the Cayman clearinghouse less than an hour ago."
"It was verified, sir," the officer replied, swallowing hard. "But the moment the transfer hit the primary beneficiary account, an automated override protocol triggered. The funds were instantly re-routed through a cascade of twelve different international shell companies before landing in a dormant trust fund."
Prosecutor Miller leaned over the table, peering at the tablet. "Who owns the trust fund? Trace the ultimate beneficiary!"
The junior officer hesitated, his face turning pale. "That's the problem, Mr. Miller. The trust fund isn't registered to David Vance. And it isn't registered to Elena Vance."
Marcus sat quietly in his chair, the steel cuffs clinking softly as he folded his hands together. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of his mouth, though his eyes remained dead and exhausted.
"Then who owns it?" Thomas barked, standing up from his chair.
"Maya Vance," the officer whispered. "Your wife, sir."
The room fell into absolute silence. The harsh hum of the fluorescent light seemed to amplify a hundred times, vibrating against the metal walls. Prosecutor Miller slowly turned his head to stare at Marcus, his jaw slightly slack.
"Your wife," Miller repeated, his voice dangerously low. "The woman who sat across from you at dinner, crying betrayal, coordinating with federal agents, playing the grieving spouse—she engineered the final sweep?"
Marcus looked up at the two men, his gaze steady and unyielding. "Maya isn't just my wife, gentlemen. She was the chief compliance officer for the venture capital firm where David and I started our company ten years ago. Long before David 'died' in Whistler. Long before we moved to Seattle."
Agent Thomas slammed his hand down onto the metal table, the loud bang echoing through the room. "You are telling me this was a setup? All of it? The audit, the federal raid, the stolen money?"
"Not a setup," Marcus corrected calmly. "An execution. David thought he was using Elena to destroy me and take my money. Elena thought she was using David to reclaim her old life. But Maya built the legal architecture that both of them used to execute the transfers."
Marcus leaned forward as far as the heavy chain on his cuffs would allow, his eyes locking onto the prosecutor's face.

"And right now, while you are sitting here questioning me in this room," Marcus whispered, "Maya is boarding a private flight out of Sea-Tac Airport with fifteen million dollars in liquid assets, heading to a country with no extradition treaty."
