Chapter 4 - The Sound in the Hallway

The metallic chime of the private elevator echoed through the penthouse with the finality of a courtroom gavel. Marcus froze, half-risen from his chair, his eyes darting from the glowing indicator light above the elevator doors to Maya’s unreadable face. The digital display numbers were counting down: fourth floor, fifth floor, sixth floor.

"You didn't," Marcus breathed, his voice dropping to a desperate rasp. "You actually brought federal agents to our home during dinner?"

"I brought accountability, Marcus," Maya replied, her voice steady as she smoothed down the front of her brown blazer. "You built an empire on stolen identities, forged signatures, and the quiet erasure of people who stood in your way. Did you really think there would be no bill to pay?"

The elevator indicator stopped at the penthouse level. The soft ding sounded again, followed by the heavy, mechanical slide of the double doors opening into the private foyer.

Marcus didn't look at the doors. He looked at Maya, seeing the stranger behind the woman he had loved for five years. "Everything I built, I built for us. For this life. The penthouse, the investments, the security—it was all to ensure we never had to look back."

"Stolen money is not security, Marcus," Maya said, turning her back to him to face the foyer. "It is just a ticking clock."

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor of the entryway. Two figures emerged from the shadows of the private hallway, both wearing tailored dark suits and carrying credentials that caught the warm light of the wall sconces. The lead agent, a tall man with iron-gray hair and sharp, assessing eyes, scanned the opulent dining room before locking his gaze directly onto Marcus.

"Marcus Vance, also known as Marcus Reed?" the lead agent asked, his voice carrying the flat, authority-dripping cadence of federal enforcement.

Marcus stood frozen beside the marble dining table, his hand resting on the back of his chair. The gnocchi on his plate was completely cold now, the meat congealed in a pool of rich sauce. He looked down at his smartphone, still dark on the table, and realized the battery hadn't died. The device had been remotely locked the moment the elevator started its ascent.

"You have the wrong man," Marcus said, though the words felt hollow even to his own ears. "My name is Marcus Reed. I am a senior partner at—"

"You are a fugitive from financial fraud and identity theft charges dating back to 2018," the agent interrupted, stepping closer and reaching inside his jacket. "And you are coming with us."

May you like

Maya stepped aside, her expression entirely devoid of emotion as the agent pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. But just as the cold metal brushed against Marcus’s wrist, his phone on the table lit up again, vibrating violently against the marble with a single incoming video call from an unrecognized, international number.
