Chapter 13 - The Breach at Dawn

The red emergency lights flashed in a frantic rhythm against the gray concrete walls of Cell Block B as the facility-wide lockdown siren continued to wail. Marcus stood near the barred door of his cell, listening to the chaotic symphony of shouting guards, clanging iron gates, and heavy boots rushing down the corridor toward the intake wing.

An unauthorized extraction at a federal penitentiary of this security level was virtually impossible. Unless someone on the inside had systematically dismantled the facility's internal digital protocols hours before the alarm was ever triggered.

The heavy steel door of the cell adjacent to Marcus's slammed open with a deafening crash. A correctional officer was thrown backward into the corridor, sliding across the polished concrete floor before hitting the opposite wall with a heavy thud.

Stepping out from the shadows of the tier walkway was a tall, imposing figure wearing a dark tactical jacket with the insignia of a federal compliance auditor. Behind him walked two masked operatives holding digital override keypads.

Marcus gripped the steel bars of his door, his eyes widening in disbelief as the figure stopped directly in front of his cell. The man lowered his tactical hood, revealing the sharp, scarred features of David Vance.

"Hello, Marcus," David said, his voice dripping with a cold, mocking amusement as he tapped a digital key against the electronic door lock. "Did you really think a federal cell would be enough to keep us separated?"

Marcus stared at him, the shock rendering him momentarily speechless. "You... you were arrested this afternoon. The federal agents took you into custody at your dock."

"Federal agents who answered to a Cayman Islands shell corporation I controlled long before you ever met Maya," David corrected smoothly, pressing his key against the panel. The electronic lock flashed green, and the heavy cell door swung inward with a mechanical hiss. "Did you honestly think Maya was the only one playing a long game?"

Marcus stepped back, his fists clenching at his sides. "Maya liquidated everything, David. The accounts are gone. The trust foundation took every dime."

David smiled, a cold, humorless grin that didn't reach his eyes. "The foundation was never the final destination, Marcus. It was a digital decoy designed to trigger an automated federal asset freeze. A freeze that forced the government to aggregate every single hidden account into a single holding pool right here in this district's federal reserve."

David stepped inside the cell, closing the distance between them until he was standing inches away, his breath smelling faintly of cold rain and expensive scotch.

"And right now," David whispered, leaning in close to Marcus's ear, "Elena is walking out of the federal reserve basement with fifteen million dollars in physical bearer bonds, while Maya is already waiting on a freighter off the coast of Vancouver."

Marcus stared at David, the final pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in his mind. It wasn't a civil war between betrayed spouses. It was a family reunion.

Before Marcus could speak, the emergency lights in the cell block suddenly cut out entirely, plunging the tier into absolute, suffocating darkness.
