Chapter 6 - The Red Countdown

The glowing red numbers projected against the penthouse windows ticked downward with terrifying precision: 03:58, 03:57, 03:56. The entire dining room was bathed in an eerie crimson glow that turned the lit candles into bleeding pillars of wax and cast distorted, giant shadows across the walls.
"Get down!" the federal agent shouted, instantly abandoning Marcus to draw his service weapon and shove Maya toward the reinforced structural pillars near the kitchen entrance. "Code Red! We have an active targeting sweep! Secure the perimeter!"
Marcus remained standing by the table, paralyzed. The crimson light illuminated the cold gnocchi on his plate, making the meat look like fresh blood. His mind raced frantically, trying to calculate every variable, every hidden threat, every betrayal that had brought him to this exact second.
The voice on the phone chuckled softly through the speaker. "Do you like the view, Marcus? Five years of planning, five years of hiding in plain sight, all culminating in a very public reckoning."
"Who are you?" Maya shouted from behind the pillar, her voice trembling with genuine fear now, stripping away her cold composure. "If you are Elena, show your face! What is this?"
"Elena is downstairs, my dear," the distorted voice replied. "Enjoying a very expensive bottle of champagne while she watches your husband’s empire burn to the ground. But I am the architect of the foundation. The man Marcus thought he buried in Whistler."
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs. He gripped the edge of the marble table so hard his fingers went numb. "David," he whispered, the name tearing itself from his chest. "David Vance. You’re alive."
"Of course I am alive, you absolute fool," the voice snapped, the digital filter dropping for a split second to reveal a cold, venomous snarl. "You pushed me off that ridge in Whistler because I discovered your embezzlement scheme. You left me for dead in the snow. Did you really think a few thousand feet of ice could stop me from collecting what you owe?"
The countdown on the window hit 02:15.
The federal agent lowered his weapon slightly, looking between Marcus and the phone with absolute confusion. "Vance, what is this? Who is on this line?"
"He's the man I stole from," Marcus said, his voice strangely calm now, the terror giving way to a grim, fatalistic clarity. He looked at Maya, who was staring at him in horror from across the room. "He is the reason I started laundering the money. Not for greed, Maya. To keep him from coming after us."
"That is a lie!" Maya yelled, stepping out from behind the pillar. "You said the money was for our future! You said you earned every dime!"
"She believes you, Marcus," David’s voice mocked from the phone. "She slept next to a thief for five years, trusting a man who built his entire life on a mountain of corpses and forged paper."
The timer hit 00:45.
"Marcus," the lead federal agent barked, stepping forward with his cuffs raised again. "We are leaving right now. Move!"

Before Marcus could take a single step toward the elevator, the phone on the table chimed with a deafening tone, and the screen flashed a single word across the display: TRANSFER COMPLETE.
