Chapter 10 - The Flight Out of Seattle

The rain fell in heavy, rhythmic sheets against the reinforced glass of the private aviation terminal at Sea-Tac Airport. The tarmac gleamed under the amber glare of the runway floodlights, reflecting the sleek fuselage of a twin-engine Gulfstream idling near the hangar.

Maya stood inside the terminal’s VIP lounge, wearing her brown blazer and the gold pendant necklace, looking out at the rain-slicked runway. In her hand, she held a secure tablet displaying a live financial dashboard. The numbers scrolled past in a dizzying cascade of green text: USD 15,482,910.00 — SECURED.

The heavy oak door of the lounge swung open, and Elena stepped inside, shaking the rain from her trench coat. Her expression was a mixture of triumph and lingering paranoia.

"The federal precinct just called my contact," Elena said, breathless, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window. "Marcus is still locked in the interrogation room. They are tearing his alibis apart piece by piece."

Maya didn't turn around. She kept her eyes fixed on the idling jet outside. "And David?"

"David is already on his way to his private dock in the San Juan Islands," Elena replied, a triumphant smile breaking across her face. "He thinks he won. He thinks the four million we funneled to his offshore account is his final victory."

Maya finally turned, looking at Elena with a cool, detached amusement. "Did you actually believe we were going to leave him four million dollars after everything he did?"

Elena’s smile faltered. Her dark eyes narrowed as she stepped closer to Maya. "What are you talking about? The transfer to David's account cleared twenty minutes ago. I saw the confirmation myself."

"You saw the preliminary clearinghouse receipt, Elena," Maya said softly, tapping the screen of her tablet. "Standard banking protocol allows a forty-minute window for secondary fraud verification before a final settlement clears. Exactly three minutes ago, that window closed."

Elena’s breath hitched. "What did you do?"

"I executed a clawback provision embedded in the original holding agreement," Maya said calmly. "The same agreement David drafted when we founded the company a decade ago—back when he was too arrogant to include an arbitration clause for corporate dissolution. Every single cent of that four million has been pulled back into our primary trust."

Elena lunged forward, her hand slamming onto the glass table between them. "You lied to me! We had an agreement! You said David would pay for what he did to you!"

"David paid for what he did to my brother," Maya corrected, her voice dropping to a freezing whisper. "Just like Marcus is paying for what he built on top of those lies. You were a useful instrument, Elena. Your anger at Marcus made you sloppy. You never once bothered to read the fine print of the trust documents you signed last Tuesday at the café."

Elena stared at Maya, the full horrifying realization washing over her face. "You used us both. You used David's obsession and Marcus's paranoia to clean out every account they ever touched."

"I simply collected an inheritance that was long overdue," Maya replied, turning back to the window as the terminal door chimed.

Two armed security guards entered the lounge, flanked not by airport personnel, but by two men in dark suits bearing federal credentials that Elena recognized instantly.
