Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Basement

In the subterranean security office, the fluorescent lights flickered violently as Thomas Vance slammed his fists down onto the wooden desk, knocking the coffee mug to the floor where it shattered into a thousand dark ceramic shards.
"You stubborn old fool!" Thomas roared, dropping the polished persona entirely as rage took over. "You think you can stand in the way of a twenty-million-dollar bond restructuring? That money is the only thing keeping this district afloat, and my family’s construction firm earned every cent of it!"
"You embezzled funds meant for classroom supplies and student programs," Marcus said, stepping back and keeping his hand firmly planted on the auxiliary recording deck’s emergency lock button. "You didn't just steal from the state, Thomas. You stole from every kid sitting in these classrooms, including your own son."
"Leo is weak," Thomas snarled, his face contorted with contempt. "He spends his time playing whistleblower instead of preparing to take over what we’ve built. If he doesn't learn how the real world works now, he never will."
Marcus didn't reply. Instead, he watched the small blinking upload progress bar on his computer screen tick steadily upward: Eighty-five percent complete. All he needed was another fifteen seconds. Fifteen seconds for the entire archive of financial corruption, text messages, and surveillance logs to finish transmitting to the state investigative bureau's secure drop box.

Thomas noticed the progress bar on the secondary monitor. His eyes widened with sudden horror as he realized what the security guard was doing. With a guttural cry, the superintendent lunged across the desk, his hands reaching out to grab Marcus by the throat and yank him away from the console before the transfer could finish.
