Chapter 3 - The Watchful Eye

Down in the subterranean security office, the fluorescent lights hummed a monotonous, high-pitched tune that gave Marcus headache after headache. He sat slumped in his ergonomic chair, wearing his dark security uniform with the gold badge gleaming faintly under the overhead glare. On the sprawling bank of monitors before him, dozen of hallways, stairwells, and cafeterias flickered with the dull, lifeless movement of after-school custodial staff and lingering students.
Suddenly, the black screen designated for Room 404 flickered violently, shedding its blanket of static as the live data stream reconnected. Marcus blinked, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the scuffed wooden desk. The green indicator light in the corner of the digital feed confirmed the feed was live, broadcasting in crisp, high-definition color directly to his station.
On the screen, Eleanor Vance stood frozen mid-stride, her face drained of its professional color, while a young boy with messy light brown hair held a hand to his bruised cheek. In the background, a young girl with glasses peered cautiously over the edge of her desk, her expression a mix of terror and grim determination.
Marcus reached out slowly, his calloused thumb hitting the record button to capture the incoming footage to the local secure drive. In his twelve years working security for the district, he had seen plenty of heated teacher-student arguments, but this was entirely different. This was calculated cruelty, an abuse of power captured in chilling, undeniable detail.
"What are you hiding, Eleanor?" Marcus murmured to himself, watching the monitor as the teacher’s lips moved in harsh, silent threats that he couldn't hear over the hum of the server racks.
He reached for his radio to call administration, his finger hovering over the transmission button. But before he could press it, the office door behind him clicked open. District Superintendent Thomas Vance stepped into the cramped room, holding a steaming cup of black coffee and smiling warmly at the security guard.

"Evening, Marcus," Thomas said smoothly, his eyes casually scanning the bank of screens before lingering uncomfortably long on the live feed of Room 404, where his own son stood crying. "I trust everything on the monitors is completely normal tonight?"
