Chapter 4 - The Superintendent's Shadow

Marcus’s thumb remained frozen an inch above the radio’s transmission toggle, the hum of the server racks suddenly feeling like a deafening roar in the confined security office. He looked up at Superintendent Thomas Vance, whose casual smile didn’t quite reach his cold, calculating eyes. On the monitor directly above the superintendent’s right shoulder, Room 404 was still broadcasting in real-time: Eleanor was now whispering something venomous into Leo’s ear while Maya ducked her head behind her textbook.

"Everything’s quiet, Mr. Vance," Marcus replied evenly, forcing his voice to remain flat and devoid of any panic. He casually slid his left hand across the desk to cover the physical recording indicator light on the auxiliary capture deck. "Just routine evening patrols and a few kids finishing up detention work in the west wing."

Thomas took a slow sip of his coffee, his gaze lingering on the screens. He didn't look panicked, nor did he look surprised. That subtle lack of shock sent a cold shiver down Marcus’s spine. It was as if the superintendent already knew what was happening behind closed classroom doors, or worse, expected it.

"Good, good," Thomas said, setting his coffee mug down with a sharp clink on the edge of the desk. He leaned in closer, resting his palms on the wooden surface and staring directly into Marcus’s eyes. "We live in complicated times, Marcus. People make mistakes under pressure. Teachers, administrators, even students from prominent local families. It’s important that we handle these... misunderstandings internally, before they reach the school board or, heaven forbid, the local press."

Marcus held his ground, though every instinct screamed at him to shove the superintendent aside and call the police. "Sometimes a mistake crosses a line, sir. Sometimes it’s evidence of something systemic."

"Systemic is just a fancy word for messy," Thomas replied, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its previous warmth. "And messes require cleaning, not broadcasting to the entire world. Let's review the footage together, Marcus. Just you and me. Let’s see what actually happened in Room 404 before we make any rash decisions that could ruin multiple careers."

Marcus felt the trap closing around him. He slowly removed his hand from the desk, leaving the live monitor feed fully exposed to the superintendent's searching gaze.
