Chapter 8

With the front door closing softly behind the police officers and Rebecca, the living room felt entirely different. The oppressive tension that had dominated the space for hours lifted, replaced by a quiet, exhausted stillness. Arthur sank slowly into the armchair opposite the desk, exhaling a long, shuddering breath that seemed to release decades of accumulated stress. David remained standing near the window, watching the tail lights of the police cruiser disappear down the quiet suburban street.
"Are you alright, Arthur?" David asked softly, walking over to pour two glasses of water from the crystal pitcher on the sideboard. He handed one to the older man, their fingers brushing briefly in a gesture of enduring mutual respect.
"I'm shaken, David, I won't lie to you," Arthur admitted, taking a grateful sip of the cool water. "But more than anything, I'm just deeply sorry you had to experience this. Betrayal from someone you love is a heavy cross to carry."
"It's not your fault," David said, sitting down on the edge of the sofa. "I ignored the warning signs. I wanted to believe everything was fine because the alternative was too painful to confront. But seeing it on that screen... it forced me to open my eyes."
They sat together in comfortable silence for a long time as the amber light of dusk filtered through the windows. The physical house was intact, the furniture unchanged, yet everything about their reality had shifted fundamentally. David knew the coming weeks would bring legal battles, financial audits, and public scrutiny, but for the first time in months, he felt a profound sense of clarity. The deception had been exposed, the truth brought to light, and the foundation for a genuine future cleared of toxic falsehoods.

Arthur eventually stood up, smoothing down his tan cardigan and adjusting his glasses. "I should head home, David. Let you process everything in peace. But call me tomorrow. We'll start untangling the legal mess together."
"Thank you, Arthur," David replied, walking his lifelong mentor to the door. "For everything. For standing your ground."
