Chapter 4

The silence in the living room grew heavy, oppressive, and thick enough to choke on. David lowered his hand holding the phone, the screen finally going dark as the battery saver kicked in, plunging the room back into the warm, natural afternoon light. Rebecca shifted her weight from one black boot to the other, her eyes dropping briefly to the floor before flashing back up with defensive defiance. She knew the evidence was irrefutable, yet she carried herself as if she were the wronged party in this domestic tragedy.
"You think you're so smart with your cameras and your security systems, don't you, David?" Rebecca said, her voice dropping the frantic tremor entirely, replacing it with a sharp, venomous edge.
Arthur took a measured step backward, giving the estranged couple space while keeping a watchful eye on the situation. He recognized the tone in Rebecca's voice; it was the sound of a cornered animal realizing its trap had failed completely. David stared at his wife, struggling to reconcile the person standing before him with the woman he had married five years ago. He thought back over the past few months—the subtle shifts in her behavior, the unexplained late-night phone calls, the sudden obsession with his personal finances and property deeds.
"What did you want, Rebecca?" David asked again, his voice steadying, devoid of anger now, replaced by a hollow, chilling resolve. "Why frame Arthur? What does he have to do with whatever game you're playing?"

Rebecca let out a harsh, dry laugh that lacked any humor. "Arthur is just collateral, David. He's old, he's retired, and everyone loves him. Who were you going to believe—your lifelong mentor or your loving wife accusing him of assault? It was supposed to be an open-and-shut case. You would have thrown him out of our lives, cut all ties, and left me managing the estate while you wallowed in your righteous indignation."
The pieces clicked together in David's mind with sickening clarity. It wasn't about Arthur at all. It was about control, isolation, and ultimately, assets. Arthur had recently expressed concern to David regarding Rebecca's excessive spending habits and her repeated inquiries into the transfer of property titles. Arthur had been trying to protect David from financial ruin, and in response, Rebecca had engineered a scheme to eliminate the loyal old friend permanently from their inner circle.
