Chapter 1

David stood breathless inside the sunlit living room, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The sudden burst of energy that carried him through the doorway had left him momentarily dizzy. Across the polished hardwood floor, Rebecca clutched the fabric of her dark maroon blouse near her collarbone. Her blonde wavy hair fell across her pale face in a chaotic tangle, mirroring the storm in her wide, terrified eyes. She took a ragged breath, her chest heaving visibly beneath the silk, before her voice pierced the tense air with a sharp, trembling accusation.
"He grabbed me!" she cried, pointing a shaking finger toward Arthur, who stood only a few feet away.
Arthur, a man in his sixties with kind eyes magnified behind thick wire-rimmed glasses, recoiled slightly. He wore a light tan cardigan over a crisp blue button-up shirt, his grey hair neatly combed despite the mounting chaos. Arthur immediately stepped forward, holding his hands up defensively as David approached with fists clenched at his sides. The dark blue long-sleeve shirt David wore stretched tightly across his shoulders as he radiated suppressed fury, his eyes darting between his wife and the older man who had been a fixture in their lives for over a decade. Arthur had known David since childhood, acting as a surrogate father figure, which made the sudden betrayal cut even deeper.

"David, I never touched her!" Arthur protested, his voice cracking with genuine disbelief and hurt.
The silence that followed was suffocating. David felt a cold numbness spread through his limbs. He looked at Rebecca, searching her features for any sign of a joke or a hysterical misunderstanding, but found only the stark realism of deep distress. Her breathing remained shallow, her lower lip trembling as she pulled herself tighter into the corner near the entrance. Arthur kept his palms raised, a gesture of absolute surrender, though his jaw was set with quiet dignity. He refused to cower, yet his posture radiated vulnerability. The bright afternoon sunlight streaming through the large front windows felt bitterly ironic, illuminating a scene that felt increasingly surreal. David realized in that heavy second that their peaceful domestic life had just fractured beyond repair, and whatever truth lay buried beneath this confrontation was about to surface whether anyone was ready for it or not.
