Chapter 10

Two days later, David found himself sitting across from Marcus Sterling in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of the downtown law firm. Stacks of neatly organized legal folders rested on the polished walnut table between them. Arthur sat quietly to David's right, serving as a trusted advisor and character witness as they finalized the formal divorce petition and asset recovery documents. The atmosphere in the room was clinical and efficient, a stark contrast to the emotional volatility of the living room confrontation.
The conference room door opened quietly, and Detective Miller entered, holding a secure flash drive containing the finalized digital evidence log and the official police report transcripts. He nodded respectfully to the three men before taking a seat near the end of the table.
"Just wanted to update you on the criminal side of things, Mr. Vance," Miller said, opening his notepad. "Rebecca has been formally charged with filing a false police report and attempted financial fraud. Her defense attorney is trying to negotiate a plea deal in exchange for dropping the more severe larceny counts, but given the undeniable nature of the video evidence, the prosecutor is pushing for a strict sentencing guideline."
David listened impassively. The anger he had felt initially had dissolved into a quiet, resolute calm. "I don't wish her harm, Detective. I just want a clean break and assurance that she can no longer interfere with my life, my property, or my friends."

"Understandable, and legally achievable," Marcus added, sliding a fresh document across the table for David's signature. "This stipulation ensures a permanent restraining order alongside the asset recovery settlement. Once you sign this, the civil side is essentially airtight."
David picked up the heavy metal pen, hovering his hand over the signature line. He thought back to the moment he burst through the doorway, hearing Rebecca's frantic cry and fearing the worst. He thought of Arthur standing tall with his hands raised, defending his integrity against a malicious lie. With a steady hand, David signed his name cleanly across the paper, sealing the chapter of his life defined by deception and opening the door to an honest future.
