Chapter 3

The security application on David's smartphone finally stopped spinning, opening to a crisp, high-definition playback menu. With a dry throat and a racing pulse, David tapped the timeline cursor, dragging it backward by exactly four minutes to the moment before he had burst through the front door. The small screen illuminated his stunned face with a harsh, blue-tinted glow. Arthur stood quietly beside him, hands now resting loosely in the pockets of his tan cardigan, maintaining a dignified silence while the past played out in miniature digital pixels.
On the screen, the living room appeared empty for a brief moment before Rebecca walked into frame from the hallway. She looked entirely composed, her breathing steady and normal. Then, with deliberate and chilling precision, she reached up, grabbed the collar of her own maroon blouse, and ripped the buttons downward with enough force to tear the fabric near the seam. She tossed her blonde hair violently from side to side, mussing her waves into a convincing state of disarray, before letting out a blood-curdling shriek designed specifically to draw David running from the garage.
David stopped breathing. The phone felt suddenly heavy in his palm, like a block of solid lead. He stared down at the tiny screen, watching the ghost of his wife orchestrate a malicious fabrication with rehearsed ease. When he looked up from the device, his eyes met Rebecca's. The illusion of distress had completely evaporated from her features. Her face was a mask of cold hostility, devoid of any remorse or shame. She didn't try to run, nor did she offer an excuse. She simply stood there in the doorway, staring back at him with a deadpan defiance that sent a shiver straight down his spine.

"Why?" David finally managed to whisper, the word catching painfully in his throat.
Rebecca crossed her arms over her torn blouse, her posture stiff and unyielding. Arthur shook his head slowly, a deep sadness settling into the wrinkles around his eyes. The physical danger in the room had vanished, replaced by the far more devastating reality of a calculated betrayal. David realized that the woman he had loved, trusted, and built a life with was a stranger wearing a familiar face, and the implications of her actions were only just beginning to unfold.
