Chapter 6

With the forged documents clutched firmly in his hand, David reached into his pocket and retrieved his phone once more. He bypassed the security app entirely, swiping directly to his recent contacts list. Rebecca watched him with narrowed eyes, her confident facade finally showing the first genuine cracks of panic. The reality that her actions had crossed legal boundaries—extending far beyond domestic manipulation into actual fraud and false reporting—began to register behind her tense expression.
"Who are you calling?" Rebecca demanded, taking a sharp step forward before stopping herself as Arthur subtly shifted his weight to block her path toward David.
"Detective Miller," David replied evenly, tapping the screen and placing the phone to his ear. "And our divorce attorney. In that order."
Rebecca's face drained of color. "David, wait. Let's not be rash. We can talk about this. We can fix this between us without getting the police involved. Think about what a public scandal will do to your reputation at the firm, to our friends, to our lives!"
"You didn't think about the consequences when you fabricated an assault charge against an innocent man to steal my family's property," David said coldly, turning away from her as the call connected on the other end.

Arthur placed a comforting, steady hand on David's shoulder. The older man offered an approving nod, silently validating the difficult choice David was making. Years of loyalty and shared history could not blind them to the criminality of what had just occurred. The phone conversation was brief and direct; David gave Detective Miller the address, summarized the situation concisely, and explicitly mentioned the digital video evidence safely stored in the cloud backup.
When David ended the call, the living room fell back into a heavy, expectant silence. Rebecca stood paralyzed in the doorway, her hands trembling slightly at her sides. The fight had drained completely out of her, leaving behind only the cold realization of impending accountability. She had played her hand aggressively, betting everything on David's blind trust, only to watch her entire scheme collapse in less than fifteen minutes because of a single blinking red light in the corner of the ceiling.
