Chapter 9

The rain outside beat a steady, relentless rhythm against the warehouse windows as Clara walked over to her desk and tapped the keyboard, waking the terminal from its low-power sleep mode. The green text prompt blinked rhythmically, a digital pulse in the quiet room. She looked back at Leo, who stood near the kitchen island, his hands resting flat against the dark wood surface.
"If we broadcast the Janus logs directly to the press, Vance’s legal team will obtain an emergency injunction within minutes," Clara said, her analytical mind working through the logistical hurdles. "They will shut down the server nodes, freeze our bank accounts, and brand us as domestic cyber-terrorists before the morning edition hits the stands."
"Not if we route the transmission through the foundation's secure international servers," Leo countered, stepping closer to the desk. "Your family’s philanthropic network has diplomatic data-sharing privileges that bypass standard domestic corporate injunctions. Vance’s lawyers can't touch your routing protocols without triggering an international trade investigation."
Clara stared at the young man, a slow realization dawning on her. "You planned this part from the beginning. You didn't just come to my loft to explain; you targeted my foundation because of its legal immunities."
Leo nodded without hesitation, offering a quiet, apologetic smile. "I needed someone with the resources, the access, and—most importantly—the moral compass to see it through to the end. I watched you at the gala, Mrs. Sterling. You didn't look away when Julian struck my sister. That’s why I left the trace for you to follow."
Before Clara could respond, her smartphone vibrated loudly against the wooden desk. She glanced at the screen, and her stomach dropped. The caller ID read St. Jude Memorial Hospital.
She swiped to answer, pressing the device tightly against her ear. "This is Clara Sterling."
"Mrs. Sterling, this is Nurse Henderson at St. Jude," a hurried, breathless voice whispered through the static. "You need to get down here immediately. Two men claiming to be private medical transporters just arrived with a transfer order signed by Judge Vance. They’re trying to move Maya to an undisclosed facility."
"Judge Vance? Julian’s uncle?" Clara’s voice sharpened with alarm. "Do not let them touch her. I am on my way."
She hung up abruptly and looked at Leo, whose face had gone pale with sudden panic. "They found her," Leo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Vance is moving her off the grid before we can release the files."

"We don't have time to drive," Clara said, reaching for her heavy wool coat and grabbing a secure hardware dongle from the top drawer of her desk. "We upload the first data block right now while we're in transit. My car is equipped with a satellite uplink tied directly to the foundation's private network."
Leo pulled the silver flash drive from his pocket, holding it up so the metal casing caught the amber light of the room. "Let's finish what Maya started."
