Chapter 12: The Final Confrontation

The massive mahogany doors of the executive boardroom swung open slowly, revealing Julian Vance standing behind a sleek glass desk that overlooked the glittering, rain-streaked skyline of the city. Julian looked exhausted, his black tuxedo jacket discarded over the back of his leather chair, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. In the corner of the room, seated in a comfortable leather armchair, sat Maya. She looked pale, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, but the small white bandage on her forehead was clean and she was awake, her dark eyes blinking slowly as she looked up and saw her brother standing in the doorway.

"Leo," Maya whispered, her voice small but clear in the vast, silent room.

Leo took a sharp intake of breath, stepping past Marcus Thorne and the security guards without breaking his gaze from his sister. "Maya. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she replied, pulling the blanket tighter around her shoulders.

Julian turned away from the window, his expression a mask of desperate resignation. He gestured casually for his guards to stand down, realizing that brute force would no longer salvage his crumbling empire.

"You kids really don't understand the forces you're playing with, do you?" Julian said, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. "Project Janus wasn't built to spy on ordinary citizens; it was built to protect national security interests against foreign entities that want to dismantle our financial infrastructure."

"Don't wrap treason in the flag, Julian," Clara snapped, walking into the room and standing defensively beside Leo and Maya. "You built a surveillance state to blackmail regulators and secure illegal mergers. The entire city is watching the live feed right now."

Julian let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "You think a few leaked files will destroy Vance Industries? The courts move slowly, Mrs. Sterling. By the time the ink dries on any indictment, my legal team will have tied up every asset you own for the next decade."

"He's wrong," Leo said firmly, tapping the ruggedized laptop he carried under his arm. "The files didn't just go to the media. They went to the federal regulatory commission’s encrypted master ledger. The EMP pulse won't work because the data is already decentralized across a thousand independent nodes."

Julian’s face finally lost all color. The arrogant facade crumbled completely, leaving behind a terrified man who realized his entire life’s work had vanished into the digital ether.

Marcus Thorne stepped into the room behind them, his hand dipping instinctively toward his jacket pocket, but a sharp metallic click echoed from the elevator lobby behind him as three armed federal marshals stepped out of the car, their badges gleaming under the hallway lights.

"Julian Vance, you're under arrest for corporate espionage, assault, and obstruction of justice," Detective Miller announced loudly, stepping past Marcus and placing a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder.
