Chapter 8

The heavy metal door clicked shut as Clara unlatched the chain and stepped back, allowing the young man to enter her loft. He moved with a quiet, practiced grace, shaking the rainwater from his dark jacket before taking a cautious survey of the open-concept space. The industrial lighting cast long, stark shadows across the exposed brick walls and the rows of heavy leather furniture.
"Don't worry, I didn't bring a tail," the young man said quietly, noticing Clara’s tense posture near the kitchen counter. He pulled back the sleeve of his jacket slightly, exposing the heavy silver chain bracelet that gleamed dully under the amber pendant lights. "My name is Leo. The girl in the hospital is my sister, Maya."
Clara’s defensive stance softened slightly, though her vigilance remained razor-sharp. "Maya? The police ran her fingerprints through every available database. There was nothing. Who drops an eight-year-old into a high-security corporate gala to steal a master hardware token?"
Leo let out a heavy sigh, walking slowly toward the large arched windows that overlooked the slick, rain-soaked streets below. He stared out into the darkness for a long moment before speaking. "We didn't have a choice, Mrs. Sterling. Our father was the lead architect on Project Janus before Vance Industries decided he knew too much about the system's surveillance capabilities. They staged an accident three years ago. Brakes failing on a mountain pass. Maya and I survived, but we've been living in the shadows ever since, watching Vance grow richer on our father’s intellectual property."
"If Julian Vance wanted you silenced, why send Maya to steal the phone instead of going to the authorities?" Clara asked, stepping closer to the center island.
"The authorities are part of the payroll," Leo replied bitterly, turning to face her. "We couldn't walk into a police precinct with a flash drive and expect justice. Vance has judges, prosecutors, and federal regulators in his pocket. The only way to stop Project Janus was to hit him where it hurts—extracting the root keys directly from his physical possession in front of enough witnesses to make it impossible to sweep under the rug."
"You used an eight-year-old child as bait?" Clara’s voice rose, a mixture of disbelief and anger sharp in her tone. "Julian attacked her, Leo! She has a severe head injury and she’s currently unresponsive in a hospital bed."
Leo flinched, the stoic armor cracking for a fraction of a second. Pain flashed across his youthful face, quickly masked by a stubborn, determined resolve. "Maya insisted. She’s smarter than you think, and she knew Julian would never suspect a child wandering near the ballroom. It was a desperate gamble, and it went wrong when Julian lost his temper."
Clara crossed her arms, processing the devastating weight of the confession. She looked at the encrypted desktop terminal still glowing in the corner, realizing the full scope of the war being fought beneath the glittering surface of the city's high society.

"The hardware token isn't enough anymore," Clara said quietly. "Julian knows someone else was in the security annex. His security team is scouring the city for you, and Detective Miller is starting to ask questions that could expose Maya's identity to Vance's people."
Leo stepped forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "That’s why I'm here, Mrs. Sterling. We need to upload the decrypted master logs to every major independent media outlet simultaneously before Vance wipes the central servers. And we need your help to do it."
