Chapter 11: The Vance Tower Siege

The towering monolith of Vance Industries pierced the stormy night sky like a jagged black obsidian blade, its upper stories shrouded in low-hanging clouds. Clara’s sedan pulled into the underground subterranean parking structure, its headlights sweeping across the rows of luxury vehicles parked in reserved bays. Leo sat in the passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the ruggedized laptop as the progress bar on the screen ticked slowly upward.
"Seventy-five percent," Leo announced, the blue light reflecting off his pale face. "Almost there. If we lose connection inside the building, the remaining files will dump into a public dead-drop box that automatically releases at dawn."
"Stay here in the car if you can," Clara said, opening her door and stepping out into the damp, echoing concrete garage. "My name still carries weight on the executive floor. I can buy you the five minutes you need to complete the transfer."
"No," Leo replied, stepping out of the car and pulling his dark jacket tight against the chill. "We go together. Julian won't listen to reason, and neither will his security detail."
They made their way toward the private elevator bank reserved for executive board members. The brushed steel doors slid open silently, granting them access to the upper sanctum of corporate power. As the elevator ascended swiftly through the forty stories of steel and glass, the digital floor indicator ticked upward with agonizing slowness. Clara adjusted her wool coat, her heart hammering against her ribs, while Leo kept his hand firmly inside his jacket pocket, gripping the silver flash drive containing the master keys.
When the doors chimed and slid open on the penthouse level, they were greeted not by an empty boardroom, but by Marcus Thorne and two armed private security guards blocking the corridor. Marcus stood with his hands folded neatly in front of him, his expression cold and entirely devoid of remorse.
"Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Thorne," Marcus greeted them smoothly, stepping forward to bar their path. "Mr. Vance has been expecting you. Though we didn't expect you to bring an uninvited guest."
"Where is Maya?" Clara demanded, stepping past the security guards with an air of absolute authority that forced them to hesitate for a fraction of a second. "You have nowhere left to hide, Marcus. The Project Janus files are already being broadcast to every independent news agency in the country."
Marcus offered a slow, chilling smile. "Let them broadcast whatever they want. By morning, the board will have replaced Julian, the servers will be wiped clean by a remote EMP pulse, and this little corporate restructuring will be written off as a tragic misunderstanding."

Leo stepped up beside Clara, his right arm sliding out from his jacket. Resting against his wrist, the heavy silver chain bracelet caught the harsh white light of the penthouse ceiling.
"You forgot one thing, Marcus," Leo said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet expanse of the hallway. "The dead-drop box doesn't need the servers to stay online."
