Chapter 4

Heart pounding, Clara approached the central security monitor where the primary feed of the grand hallway was frozen on a single frame. The high-resolution display rendered the scene with terrifying clarity. On the screen, the young girl in the white dress could be seen backing away from the doorway just moments before Julian Vance lunged forward with unnatural aggression. The small wound on the child's forehead was already visible, a dark smudge of blood against pale skin, captured from an angle that the hotel's standard architectural cameras rarely recorded.
Clara reached out, her trembling fingertips brushing the cold glass of the screen as she replayed the sequence in slow motion. The footage revealed a disturbing truth: the girl had not merely stumbled into Julian’s path. She had reached out with astonishing speed, snatching the silver-cased smartphone from his jacket pocket during a brief moment of distraction, acting with the precision of a trained courier rather than a lost child.
The heavy oak door to the security annex swung open behind her, and Julian Vance strode into the room, flanked by two private bodyguards whose broad shoulders filled the narrow doorway. Julian’s tuxedo was immaculate once again, though a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead betrayed the panic that gnawed at his composure. His eyes locked onto the active monitor, widening in horror as he realized the system was displaying the exact sequence of events he had paid thousands of dollars to suppress.
"Turn that off," Julian commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, restrained growl. He stepped closer to the console, his fists clenched at his sides. "You have no business looking at classified corporate property, Clara."
Clara did not back down. She turned to face him, her eyes burning with righteous anger. "Corporate property? You nearly killed a child over a phone, Julian. And looking at this footage, you weren't trying to retrieve a lost device. You were retrieving something that proves your entire financial empire is built on stolen data."
Julian’s gaze flicked from Clara to the monitor, his face draining of what little color remained. He swallowed hard, his eyes reflecting the blue glow of the screens as he watched the digital replay loop back to the moment of the girl's fall.
"He wasn't alone," Julian whispered, the words slipping out in a breathless gasp that sounded more like a confession than a warning.

Clara frowned, the chill in the room deepening. "Who? Who wasn't alone?"
Julian ignored her question, his eyes darting frantically toward the empty hallway outside the annex. The realization that an unknown third party had already accessed the mainframe hit him with crushing force. The phone was merely a physical token; the real threat lay in the decryption keys stored within its internal memory, keys that could dismantle his corporate partnerships overnight.
