Chapter 5

The silence in the security annex grew oppressive as Julian stared blankly at the flickering monitors, the harsh blue light casting deep shadows beneath his cheekbones. Clara maintained her position between him and the control console, her posture rigid and defensive. She knew that allowing Julian to regain control of the system would spell the end of any chance for justice for the injured girl currently resting in the hospital.

"The police are already looking into the incident in the ballroom," Clara said, keeping her voice level to mask the rising tide of adrenaline. "You cannot simply bury this under a mountain of nondisclosure agreements and paid-off investigators. The girl’s medical records will show blunt force trauma, Julian. Not a fall."

Julian finally tore his gaze away from the screen, offering a cold, thin-lipped smile that failed to reach his eyes. "You think the police care about a nameless street child who wanders into high-end hotels? Clara, you live in a fairy tale. People like that appear and disappear every day. The device she took contained encryption protocols that protect millions of dollars in international investments. If those keys fall into the wrong hands, the fallout will affect half the city's banking sector—including your own family's foundation."

"Don't try to lecture me on ethics," Clara retorted, stepping slightly to the side to block his access to the master keyboard. "You assaulted a child. Whatever is on that phone does not justify brutality."

As they argued in hushed, tense tones, the door to the maintenance corridor creaked open slightly. A narrow beam of light cut across the dark floor, illuminating the spot where the intruder had recently vanished.

Through the crack, a hand reached out and pressed gently against the polished wood of the door frame. The skin was pale, the wrist adorned with a heavy silver chain bracelet that caught the fluorescent glare overhead. A brilliant lens flare danced off the polished links of the metal, casting a momentary, blinding reflection across the surface of the dark jacket worn by the unseen observer. The hand lingered for a heartbeat, fingers curled into a loose fist, before slowly withdrawing into the shadows of the service stairwell.

Julian’s body went completely rigid. He had seen the flash of silver. His eyes widened in sudden, unadulterated terror as he recognized the signature accessory of the person who had orchestrated the entire breach.

"They're still here," Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face.

Clara spun around toward the door, her heart hammering against her ribs, but the corridor beyond was empty, save for the hum of the ventilation system and the distant wail of an ambulance siren fading into the rainy night. The physical evidence was gone, the digital files had been copied, and the game had shifted from a simple corporate theft into something far more dangerous.
