Chapter 6

The grand staircase creaked under their combined weight as Julian guided Martha slowly up the plush velvet runner, placing each step with agonizing care. Elena hurried up beside them, her hand instinctively patting the pocket where the small ring of keys rested safely against her apron. Below them, in the vast marble foyer, Chloe did not follow. Instead, they heard the sharp click of her heels as she walked toward the massive mahogany double doors, presumably to make good on her threat of calling outside help.
They reached the second-floor landing, where a long, dimly lit hallway stretched out beneath a row of arched windows. The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the expensive Persian rugs that lined the floor. Julian led Martha into the quiet sanctuary of the master bedroom, a sprawling space decorated in muted tones of charcoal and silver. He gently settled her onto the edge of the king-sized bed, propping several plush pillows behind her back so she could breathe easier.
“Stay here with her, Elena,” Julian instructed in a hushed, urgent tone, his eyes scanning the perimeter of the room as if expecting an ambush. “I’m going to find those blue sewing boxes before Chloe realizes we’re up here.”
“No need to look far, Mr. Julian,” Elena whispered back, walking quickly toward the walk-in closet at the far end of the bedroom. She pushed the heavy sliding glass door open and reached up to the very top shelf, pulling down a pair of heavy, dust-covered velvet storage bins that matched the room’s aesthetic. Nestled neatly behind them were three identical vintage metal boxes painted in a faded cornflower blue, each secured with a small brass padlock.
Elena carried them out and placed them gently onto the mahogany dressing table. Her hands were steady now as she pulled the small ring of duplicate keys from her apron pocket, selecting a slender brass key and sliding it into the lock of the first box. With a quiet click, the latch sprang open.
Julian stood right behind her, his breath catching in his throat as Elena lifted the lid. Inside, the box wasn’t filled with sewing needles or spools of colorful thread at all. Instead, it was packed tight with neatly organized manila folders, bank statements bearing unauthorized signatures, and a stack of printed chat transcripts between Chloe and a man whose contact name was saved simply as 'M'.
“Look at this,” Elena murmured, pulling out a folded legal document stamped with an official state seal. “This is the forged power of attorney. She signed your name while you were recovering from pneumonia last winter, Mr. Julian. She used your medical records to forge your signature on the notary log.”

Julian reached out and took the paper from her hands. As his eyes scanned the precise forgery, the last remaining threads of doubt in his mind dissolved completely, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.
