Chapter 10

Three police officers in dark tactical uniforms poured onto the second-floor landing, led by a stern-faced detective with silver hair and a badge pinned prominently to his chest. Their hands rested casually but alertly on their holstered sidearms as they scanned the chaotic scene: the two groaning security guards on the bedroom floor, Elena standing bravely beside Martha’s bed, and Julian standing face-to-face with a visibly shaking Chloe in the doorway.

“Hold it right there! Nobody move!” the detective barked, stepping forward with an authoritative stride that immediately commanded the space. His keen eyes swept over the group, resting finally on Julian, who held up his hands slowly to show he was unarmed.

“Detective,” Julian said clearly, stepping back to give the officers room to operate. “I’m Julian Vance, the owner of this estate. I am filing formal charges of domestic abuse, extortion, corporate fraud, and identity theft against the woman standing in front of you.”

Chloe let out a sharp, breathless laugh, trying desperately to salvage her crumbling narrative as the officers approached her. “He’s lying! It’s a bitter divorce dispute! He’s trying to frame me because he caught me leaving him! Look at these thugs he just beat up in my private bedroom!”

The detective didn't even blink at her theatrical outburst. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small tablet device, tapping the screen a few times before holding it up so Chloe could see it clearly. “Mrs. Chloe Vance, or should I say Chloe Miller, using three different aliases across state lines. We’ve been tracking your corporate shell companies for over three months. Your little scheme didn't just target Mr. Vance; it triggered a federal investigation into financial racketeering.”

Elena stepped out from the bedroom holding the encrypted USB drive out toward the detective on the palm of her hand. “Officer, this drive has all the security footage and forged documents she kept in the sewing boxes. I unlocked them legally as a household employee witnessing ongoing criminal activity.”

The detective nodded approvingly, taking the drive from Elena with a careful grip and sliding it into an evidentiary pouch on his belt. He motioned to the two officers behind him. “Take her into custody. Read her her rights, secure the premises, and call the paramedics to check on the elderly woman inside.”

The two officers stepped forward, moving with practiced efficiency. Before Chloe could let out another scream of protest or launch into another fabricated defense, cold steel handcuffs snapped firmly around her wrists. The dark red satin slip dress rustled loudly as she was yanked backward down the hallway, her long dark wavy hair whipping wildly across her face as she cast one final, murderous glare in Julian’s direction.

As the heavy footsteps faded down the stairs and out toward the waiting cruiser outside, the immense weight that had crushed the Vancest estate for months finally began to lift.
