Chapter 1

The heavy mahogany front door of the estate stood slightly ajar, letting in a bitter autumn wind that whipped across the polished white marble. Julian stood frozen just inside the threshold, his knuckles white around the handle of his leather suitcase. His dark suit felt suddenly suffocating against his chest, the deep red shirt underneath sticking to his skin with cold sweat. Across the expansive foyer, beneath the dripping crystal tiers of the grand chandelier, Chloe stood with an unsettling stillness. Her long dark wavy hair fell over the silk of her dark red satin slip dress, and a simple wooden broom rested lightly in her slender hands. She did not blink. Her lips curved upward in a slow, calculated smile that reached nowhere near her cold eyes.
A few feet away, young Elena knelt on the marble floor. Her hair, tied back neatly with a crisp white bow, was slightly frayed at the edges. Her black and white maid outfit rustled as she hovered protectively over Martha, the elderly woman who had raised Julian since he was a boy. Martha sat slumped in a high-backed velvet armchair, her breathing shallow and ragged. Her blue button-down shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a dark, angry purple bruise blooming across her frail forearm. Elena’s hands trembled as she gently supported Martha’s elbow, her dark eyes darting between Julian and Chloe with a mixture of terror and fierce defiance.
Julian’s voice, raw and cracked, tore through the tense silence of the cavernous room. “Stop!”
Chloe tilted her head, her smile widening just a fraction. Her voice remained melodic and entirely devoid of panic. “Darling, why are you home so early today?”
Julian let go of his suitcase. It hit the marble floor with a dull, echoing thud. He didn’t answer her. Instead, his legs betrayed him, carrying him in two rapid strides across the open space until he dropped hard onto his knees beside Martha’s armchair. The cold stone bit through the fabric of his trousers, but he felt nothing except the frantic beating of his own heart. He reached out with trembling fingers, hovering just millimeters above Martha’s bruised arm, terrified that his touch might cause her more pain. Martha let out a pathetic, shuddering gasp and leaned her full weight against his shoulder, her tears immediately soaking into the dark fabric of his suit jacket.
“Julian,” Martha choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “Thank God. You came back. The second you leave... she locks me up in the dark, and she starves me.”

Julian’s gaze hardened into pure, blinding fury as he looked up from Martha’s frail frame to lock eyes with Chloe across the room. The air between them felt thick, charged with years of hidden deceit finally breaking through the surface.
