Chapter 5

Julian turned away from Chloe without another word, crossing the marble floor in long, furious strides to return to Martha’s side. He dropped back down to his knees, ignoring the ache in his joints, and wrapped his arms securely around the trembling elderly woman. He buried his face briefly in her gray hair, inhaling the familiar scent of lavender and old paper that had comforted him through every trial of his childhood.
“You’re not going anywhere, Mom,” Julian murmured fiercely against her ear, using the word he had reserved for her since he was a small boy. “Nobody is putting you in a home. And nobody is taking this house from us. I promise you that.”
Elena hovered nervously nearby, wringing her hands in the folds of her black and white skirt. Her white bow bobbed up and down as she nodded vigorously in agreement. “Mr. Julian, we have to act fast. She keeps the real physical documents and the backup hard drives locked inside those blue sewing boxes in the master bedroom closet. The ones she told you were just for knitting supplies. She doesn’t know I made copies of the keys yesterday when she left the ring on the vanity.”
Chloe remained by the marble pillar, her arms crossed lazily over her chest, watching the three of them with a look of supreme boredom. She tapped the heel of her designer shoe against the stone floor in a slow, rhythmic beat. “Save your breath, Elena. A maid stealing keys and conspiring against her employer? That’s grounds for immediate termination without pay, followed by a very serious lawsuit for corporate espionage. You’re ruining your life for people who can't even save themselves.”
Elena flinched, her lower lip trembling slightly, but she stood her ground, lifting her chin with a stubborn defiance that defied her young age and humble position. “I’m not afraid of you anymore, Mrs. Chloe. Everyone in this town knows what kind of person you really are. Marcus isn't the only one visiting this house when Mr. Julian is away.”
Chloe’s confident facade cracked for a split second, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her features before she quickly masked it with a cold sneer. “You talk too much, little girl. Enjoy your last few minutes under this roof.”
Julian helped Martha to her feet, supporting her frail weight carefully as she stood upright. Her legs were weak, and she leaned heavily against his side, but the wild terror in her eyes had been replaced by a grim, determined resolve. She looked across the foyer at the woman who had tormented her, her voice shaking with quiet dignity. “You can steal our money, Chloe, but you can never steal the truth. Truth has a way of coming out into the light, no matter how deep you bury it.”

Julian guided Martha toward the grand staircase, signaling with a sharp nod for Elena to follow them closely behind.
