Chapter 8: Hands of White Pine

Over the next three months, life in Rockport established an honest, beautiful rhythm.
Lucas did not return to Wall Street.
Before his finance career, Lucas had earned a degree in structural architectural design and was a master timber craftsman. He converted the farmhouse’s historic timber barn into an independent woodworking studio: *Sanctuary Timbercraft*.
Using sustainably harvested Maine white pine and red oak, Lucas designed and built bespoke children’s furniture, custom timber dining tables, and coastal cabinetry.
His reputation for flawless joinery and honest business ethics spread rapidly across New England.
Orders poured in from design studios in Boston, Portland, and Bar Harbor.
Every afternoon at 4:00 PM, Lucas would turn off his saws, wash the sawdust from his hands, and walk up to the sunlit porch where Hannah was nursing Maya in the rocking chair.
""Look at this table, Hannah,"" Lucas said one afternoon, holding a handcrafted baby highchair made of polished maple. ""No screws, no cheap veneer. Mortise and tenon joinery. It will last a hundred years.""
Hannah smiled, her eyes radiant with health and happiness. ""Just like our home, Lucas.""

Lucas kissed his wife’s lips, looking out over the blooming apple trees, knowing that fifteen hundred dollars earned with his own hands was worth more than ten million dollars steeped in control.
