Chapter 7: The Cry at Sunrise

Four days later, on a radiant Sunday morning as the coastal fog burned off the bay, Hannah’s labor began.
Rather than returning to a high-pressure urban hospital, Lucas had connected with the *Penobscot Bay Birthing Center*, directed by Dr. Claire Montgomery, a veteran rural obstetrician with forty years of experience.
The delivery room at the seaside clinic was quiet, flooded with morning sunlight, with the double-hung windows open to the sound of gulls and the sea breeze.
Lucas never left Hannah’s side.
He held her hands, wiped her brow with cool lavender cloths, and whispered steady words of courage and love through every contraction.
At 7:14 AM, a sharp, triumphant, musical cry filled the room.
Dr. Montgomery placed the newborn infant directly onto Hannah’s bare chest.
""A healthy, perfect baby girl,"" Dr. Montgomery smiled warmly. ""Seven pounds, fourteen ounces of pure perfection.""
Hannah looked down at her daughter.
The baby had a dusting of dark hair, translucent skin, and dark blue eyes that blinked with quiet wonder in the morning light.
""Maya,"" Hannah wept softly, her voice thick with overwhelming love. ""Her name is Maya.""
Lucas dropped to his knees beside the bed, burying his face against Hannah’s shoulder, his strong hands gently cradling the baby’s tiny fingers.

In that quiet room by the sea, the generational curse of the Vance family was permanently shattered.
