Chapter 2: The Cold Threshold

The nursery fell into a dead, suffocating silence, broken only by Hannah’s shallow, ragged sobs.

Evelyn sat on the rug, her emerald dress crumpled, her sleek hair coming undone. Her haughty socialite expression shifted from shock to venomous outrage as she looked up at her only son.

""How dare you touch me, Lucas!"" Evelyn shrieked, scrambling to her feet, clutching her diamond necklace. ""I am your mother! I built your career! I bought this house for you!""

""You didn't buy anything, Evelyn,"" Lucas said, his voice dropping into an icy, terrifying register. ""I took a private mortgage to buy this home so my wife would never have to breathe your toxicity. And you just breached the last boundary you will ever have in my life.""

""She’s hysterical! She refused to sign the trust covenant!""

""Get out,"" Lucas commanded.

""Lucas, you listen to me—""

""GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!"" Lucas’s roar shook the entire second floor.

He stepped forward, his eyes blazing with such unyielding ferocity that Evelyn stumbled backward through the nursery doorway into the hall.

Lucas did not look back. He followed her down the stairs, escorting her to the front door.

He opened the heavy oak door, pointed to the driveway where her chauffeured town car was waiting, and stood immovable on the threshold.

""If you ever set foot on this property, if you ever call my wife, or if you ever come within five hundred feet of my child,"" Lucas said with chilling precision, ""I will have the Greenwich police drag you to county jail in handcuffs. Your access to my life is terminated forever.""

Lucas slammed the door in her face, turned the brass deadbolt, and immediately engaged the security system.

He pulled out his phone, dialed the municipal locksmith, and ordered an immediate re-keying of every lock on the property within the hour.
