Chapter 1: The Assault in the Nursery

The soft morning light filtering through the sheer linen curtains of the nursery on Maple Avenue should have illuminated peace.

The walls were painted a tranquil sage green, framed by clean white wainscoting. In the center of the plush grey area rug stood a handcrafted white wooden convertible crib, over which a wooden mobile with plush clouds and woollen bears swayed gently in the draft.

Sitting inside the wide cushioned glider beside the crib was Hannah Vance, thirty-one.

Hannah was thirty-six weeks pregnant, dressed in a soft blush-pink satin robe, her light brown hair falling in loose, damp waves over her shoulders. Her face was pale, glistening with a cold sweat of terror. Her hands were raised defensively, palms out, as she pressed her back hard against the wooden slats of the crib.

Towering over her, her face contorted in vicious, aristocratic entitlement, was Evelyn Vance.

Evelyn was fifty-eight, wearing a tailored emerald-green long-sleeve midi dress, her dark hair pinned in a severe low bun. Her manicured fingers were digging painfully into Hannah’s bare shoulders, shaking the pregnant woman with reckless, manic force.

""You will sign the family trust addendum, Hannah!"" Evelyn hissed, her voice a venomous whisper. ""You are an ordinary schoolteacher with no pedigree. You will not ruin my grandson with your provincial ideas! The child will be registered under our Greenwich estate and raised by our governesses!""

""Please... Evelyn, stop!"" Hannah gasped, tears streaming down her cheeks as she tried to twist her body away to shield her swollen abdomen. ""You're hurting me! Stop touching me!""

The nursery door swung open with a violent, concussive bang.

Lucas Vance, thirty-three, stood in the doorway.

He wore a burgundy crewneck sweater and dark charcoal trousers. His face, normally calm and thoughtful, transformed in a fraction of a second into a mask of pure, primal shock.

For two seconds, his brain struggled to process the horrific scene: his mother, the woman who had demanded lifelong obedience in the name of family honor, physically assaulting his heavily pregnant wife inside their own home.

A sound tore from Lucas’s throat—a deep, earth-shaking roar that rattled the nursery windowpanes.

""MOM! GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY WIFE!""

Lucas moved across the room like a lightning strike.

He grabbed Evelyn’s wrists, breaking her grip on Hannah with effortless, explosive strength, and shoved his mother backward with furious momentum.

Evelyn gasped, losing her footing on the hardwood border, falling hard onto the plush grey rug beside the crib.

Lucas stepped directly between them, his towering six-foot-two frame an immovable iron wall.

Behind him, Hannah scrambled onto the floor, wrapping both arms protectively around her baby bump, burying her weeping face against the back of Lucas’s calf.

Lucas looked down at his mother sprawled on the floor. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles were white as bone, his chest heaving with ragged, furious breaths.

His face contorted in a low, trembling whisper of lethal finality.
