Chapter 11: The Harbor in Autumn

By October, the apple meadows of Rockport turned into a glorious tapestry of crimson, gold, and amber.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Lucas, Hannah, and ten-month-old Maya walked down to the small wooden dock at the edge of the property.
Maya wore a hand-knit wool cardigan and yellow socks, her bright blue eyes wide with wonder as she watched the sea gulls circle overhead.
Lucas held Maya’s small hands as she stood on her sturdy little legs on the sun-warmed cedar planks.
Maya let go of his fingers, wobbled for two seconds, and took her first four independent, triumphant steps across the dock into Hannah’s open arms.
Hannah caught the laughing baby, lifting her high into the ocean air while Maya squealed with pure, unrestrained delight.
Lucas wrapped his arms around them both, burying his face in Hannah’s hair, tears of profound, unburdened gratitude shining in his eyes.
""Look at our daughter, Lucas,"" Hannah whispered softly. ""She doesn't have a single shadow in her eyes.""

""She never will, Hannah,"" Lucas replied, his voice thick with devotion. ""Because she has an unshakeable home.""
