Chapter 9

"Hold on!" Helena screamed over the roar of the engine as she slammed the SUV into gear, spinning the steering wheel hard. The tires shrieked against the wet pavement, kicking up a rooster tail of gravel and muddy water as the heavy vehicle surged forward into the dark highway.
Julian pulled Clara down flat against the backseat floorboards, throwing his own body over hers to shield her from any stray bullets or flying glass. Through the rear window, he saw Arthur standing motionless under the flickering diner sign, his arm raised, his thumb pressing down hard on a small black remote control box.
Time seemed to slow down to a crawl.
A blinding flash of orange light erupted from the diner parking lot. The shockwave hit the back of the SUV like a physical hammer, lifting the rear tires off the ground for a terrifying second before Helena wrestled the steering wheel and forced the heavy vehicle back onto the asphalt. The deafening roar of the explosion echoed across the valley, shattering windows for a block in every direction and sending a towering plume of fire into the rainy night sky.
Inside the SUV, Clara screamed, burying her face into Julian’s jacket, trembling violently. Julian held her tighter, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He looked up through the rear window. The diner was already engulfed in roaring flames, the police cruiser swallowed by the inferno. Arthur was gone, vanished into the smoke like a ghost.
"Is everyone okay?" Helena shouted over the roar of the engine, her eyes darting constantly to the rearview mirror as she navigated the winding mountain roads at a breakneck speed.
"We're alive," Julian replied, his voice rough and steadying as he stroked Clara’s blonde hair. "She's terrified, but she's breathing."
Marcus, sitting in the front passenger seat, turned around, holding a laptop open on his knees. The screen cast a cold, eerie blue light across his scarred face. "They know we have the documents now. Arthur won't bother with local cops anymore. By sunrise, every federal database between here and the coast is going to flag us as dangerous fugitives."
Julian gently sat up, lifting Clara onto the seat beside him and buckling her in. She finally stopped crying, her exhausted eyes staring blankly out the window at the dark pine trees rushing by in a blur. Julian reached into his shirt, pulling out the slightly damp manila envelope he had rescued from the diner. He laid it flat on his knees and looked up at Helena.
"You said Arthur is tied to international syndicates," Julian said, his voice cold, devoid of any fear now. Only a razor-sharp focus remained. "Tell me everything. How deep does this go?"
Helena glanced at him in the rearview mirror, her jaw clenched. "Deeper than you can possibly imagine. The estate isn't a home, Julian. It's a front. The entire property sits on top of an underground data hub where they funnel offshore accounts for arms dealers and cartel bosses. That's why Arthur couldn't let you sell the land last year. That's why they tortured Clara—to test whether you would break under pressure and sign over the deed."
Julian’s fists clenched so tight his fingernails bit into his palms. The image of Clara’s bruised arms flashed in his mind, followed immediately by the memory of him smashing the wine glass on the dining room floor. The anger that had ignited back in that dining room wasn't fading; it was hardening into something cold, heavy, and lethal.
"We're not running anymore," Julian said quietly, the stillness in his voice making Marcus pause and look back over his shoulder.
Helena slowed the SUV slightly as they approached a rusted, overgrown gate hidden deep inside the dense forest miles away from the main highway. She killed the headlights completely, plunging them into total darkness under the thick canopy of trees.

"What are you saying, Julian?" Helena asked, putting the car in park and turning around to face him.
Julian opened the car door, stepping out into the cool rain, and looked back at Helena with a look that sent a chill down her spine. "I'm saying we’re going back to the estate. And this time, we're burning their kingdom to the ground."
