Chapter 1

The heavy oak dining table seemed to stretch for miles under the dim, unforgiving chandelier light. Julian stood near the doorway, his chest heaving, the dark green fabric of his long-sleeve shirt slightly damp from the autumn rain outside. In his arms, little Clara whimpered, her tiny fingers clutching the collar of his shirt as fresh tears tracked through the dirt and purple bruises on her cheeks. Julian’s own left eye throbbed, the skin around it split and swollen into a dark, ugly plum color. He stared across the room with a cold, terrifying fury that cut through the silence of the high-end estate.
"Who did this to my daughter?" Julian asked, his voice low, vibrating with a repressed rage that felt like a coiled spring.
At the head of the table, sitting in a velvet-upholstered chair, Eleanor took a slow, deliberate sip from her crystal wine glass. The amber liquid swirled lazily as she looked up with an expression of chilling, casual indifference. Her blonde hair fell perfectly across her shoulders, completely untouched by the chaos of the evening.
"It was just a joke, Julian," Eleanor said, waving her hand dismissively as if speaking of a spilled glass of water. "She needed toughening up. The world out there isn't gentle, and neither are we."
Julian’s gaze locked onto hers, burning with an intensity that made the air in the room feel heavy and suffocating. Without a word of warning, his hand shot out, grabbing the half-full wine glass sitting on the nearest side table. He slammed it down onto the polished hardwood floor with a deafening crash. Shards of crystal exploded in every direction, and dark red wine splashed across the Persian rug like fresh blood. Clara let out a sharp cry at the sudden noise, burying her face deeper into her father's shoulder.
Julian pulled his daughter closer, his jaw locked so tight the muscles ached. He looked directly at Eleanor and Arthur, the two people who claimed to love family above all else.
"She is my family," Julian said firmly, every word a calculated blade. "You are not."
Arthur, sitting rigidly across from Eleanor in his tailored charcoal suit, slowly pushed his chair back. His face flushed a dark crimson as he stood up aggressively, his hands gripping the edge of the table.
"You ungrateful bastard," Arthur snarled, taking a sharp step forward. "After everything we built, you walk in here and smash our property?"
May you like
Julian didn't flinch. He turned on his heel, holding Clara tight against his chest, and headed for the grand double doors.
"Let them go, Arthur," Eleanor whispered coldly, leaning back in her chair with a predatory smile. "He’ll be back on his knees by morning. He doesn't even know what’s hidden in the basement."
