Chapter 8

The rain poured down in sheets, washing the mud and blood from Julian’s face as he stared in absolute disbelief at the woman stepping out of the dark SUV. Her blonde hair was soaked, pinned back neatly against her head, her trench coat dripping with water. But it wasn't her clothes that made Julian’s breath catch in his throat—it was her face.

It was a face he had buried twelve years ago. A face he had wept over beside a mangled wreckage on a coastal cliff.

"Helena?" Julian whispered, the word sounding broken and unreal, like a ghost story whispered in the dark.

Helena looked at him with eyes full of a heavy, ancient sorrow, lowering the pistol slightly. "Get up, Julian," she said, her voice shaking slightly with emotion. "There’s no time for explanations. Arthur’s backup is less than two minutes away."

Clara, having broken free from the stunned kidnapper on the ground, scrambled through the mud and threw her arms around Julian’s legs, sobbing uncontrollably. Julian dropped to his knees in the freezing dirt, scooping his daughter into his arms and pressing her tightly against his chest, shielding her from the rain. He looked up at Helena, his mind completely fracturing under the weight of the impossibility standing before him.

"You died," Julian said, his voice cracking with anguish and betrayal. "I identified the body. I went to your funeral. Arthur helped me through it all!"

"Arthur identified a body that wasn't mine," Helena corrected harshly, stepping closer and kneeling in the mud beside them. She reached out, gently brushing a wet strand of hair from Clara’s forehead, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears. "He needed you broken, Julian. He needed you dependent on him so he could siphon the company accounts and take control of Clara's trust. The night I discovered what he was doing, my car wasn't an accident—they ran me off the road. I barely crawled out before it went over the cliff. I went into hiding to protect you both. But I waited too long."

Julian stared at her, every piece of the puzzle violently snapping into place. The missing autopsy reports, the sealed casket, Arthur’s sudden and overwhelming generosity, the manila envelope, the staged abuse—it was all part of a calculated, multi-year conspiracy to strip him of everything he loved.

"Why didn't you come back for us?" Julian asked, bitterness bleeding into his voice despite the overwhelming relief flooding his chest.

"Because the moment I surfaced, Arthur would have killed Clara to secure the trust," Helena said fiercely, grabbing Julian’s wrist with a grip that left no room for argument. "He's not just a corporate thief, Julian. He's tied to international syndicates that launder money through the estate. And tonight, when you smashed that wine glass, you forced his hand. He’s liquidating everything."

A sudden beam of harsh white headlights swept across the alleyway. The roar of a second police cruiser turning sharply into the diner parking lot echoed in the night.

"They're here," Marcus snarled, pulling the groggy kidnapper up from the mud by his collar and shoving him into the back of the SUV. "Get in the car, now!"

Helena yanked the back door of the SUV open, helping Julian lift Clara inside. Julian slid in right beside his daughter, pulling her close. As Helena slammed the door shut and leaped into the driver’s seat, Julian glanced out the rear window.

Standing under the flickering diner sign, soaked to the bone and staring directly at their escaping vehicle with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom, was Arthur. And in Arthur's hand wasn't an umbrella—it was a detonator.
