Chapter 12

Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger, the hammer of the 9mm cocked and ready. Every instinct screamed at him to pull it, to end the monster who had stolen his life, his wife, and terrorized his little girl. But Arthur’s words hung in the damp air like a poisoned cloud. In three minutes, your daughter’s trust, your accounts, and your freedom are wiped off the grid.
Marcus quickly pushed past them, dropping to his knees in front of the reinforced steel server rack embedded in the back wall of the sub-basement. The main monitor flickered with a rapid, crimson countdown timer flashing aggressively: 02:45... 02:44... Beneath it, a progress bar showed a massive data wipe protocol executing at maximum speed.
"He's not bluffing," Marcus called out, his fingers flying across the terminal keyboard in a blur. "Someone initiated a remote purge the second we breached the gate. If this hits zero, every piece of evidence clearing your name, every financial record proving Arthur’s embezzlement, and Clara’s entire inheritance vanishes into the dark web forever."
Julian looked down at Arthur, who was wheezing softly, a bloody smile plastered across his face.
"Go ahead, Julian," Arthur mocked, coughing up a streak of red. "Shoot me. But when that timer hits zero, you'll be a broke, wanted fugitive with a dead man's record, and the state will take Clara away by morning. You lose either way."
Julian felt a surge of blinding rage, but forcing himself to breathe, he shoved his gun back into its holster, grabbed Arthur by the collar of his shirt, and hauled him up to his feet, shoving him hard against the server rack.
"Deactivate it," Julian demanded, pressing his forearm against Arthur’s throat. "Now."
"I don't have the override code," Arthur wheezed, his eyes bulging slightly. "Eleanor... Eleanor holds the master key on her terminal upstairs. If you want it, you have to go through the entire house."
Julian didn't hesitate. He released Arthur, letting him slump back to the floor like a broken ragdoll, and turned to Marcus. "Can you stall it?"
"I can buy us maybe sixty seconds by rerouting the firewall, but that's it," Marcus replied, sweat beading on his forehead as he hammered keys frantically. "Go. Find Eleanor. Get that master key."
Julian bolted up the concrete stairs two at a time, bursting out of the sub-basement door into the grand, dimly lit corridors of the mansion. The house was dead silent, the heavy crystal chandeliers casting long, eerie shadows across the polished marble floors and dark wood-paneled walls. He sprinted toward the central staircase, his boots echoing loudly in the empty hallways.
As he reached the second-floor landing, a heavy double door at the far end of the gallery slowly creaked open. Standing in the doorway, bathed in the soft amber light of her private study, was Eleanor. She wasn't holding a gun. She was holding a single crystal wine glass filled with amber liquid, swirling it casually just as she had hours ago at the dining table.
"You really don't know when to quit, do you, Julian?" Eleanor asked, taking a slow sip as she leaned against the doorframe, watching him approach with predatory amusement.
Julian stopped ten feet away, his chest heaving, his hand resting on his holster. The crimson countdown in his mind was ticking down every second.

"Give me the master key, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "Or I swear to God, I will finish what I started at that dining table."
Eleanor smiled, lifting the glass to her lips. "Come and take it."
