Chapter 10

The heavy iron gate creaked in protest as Marcus forced it open, allowing the unmarked SUV to slip silently onto the overgrown access road of the estate’s rear perimeter. The rain had slowed to a misty drizzle, casting a ghostly grey veil over the sprawling, luxurious mansion visible through the dense pine trees. From this angle, away from the manicured front gardens, the estate looked like what it truly was—a heavily fortified prison built on stolen blood and dirty money.
Inside the vehicle, Clara was finally fast asleep, her head resting comfortably on Helena’s lap. Helena stroked the little girl’s blonde hair, her eyes fixed on Julian in the front seat.
"You're walking into a slaughterhouse, Julian," Helena warned softly, her voice laced with deep concern. "Arthur knows we survived the explosion. By now, his entire private security detail is locked and loaded inside that mansion."
Julian didn't look back. He was carefully checking the magazine of a heavy 9mm pistol Marcus had handed him back in the SUV. Every click of the metal felt rhythmic, natural, as if a dormant part of his soul had finally awakened after twelve years of forced submission.
"Let them wait for us," Julian said coldly, pulling the slide back with a sharp metallic snap. "They think I'm the weak link. They think I'm the man who stands by and watches while they hurt my family. Tonight, I'm going to remind them who built the foundation they're standing on."
Marcus killed the engine. The SUV rolled silently to a stop behind a thick cluster of rhododendron bushes, completely hidden from the mansion’s rear security cameras. Marcus reached into the back, pulling out a heavy tactical duffel bag filled with wire cutters, encrypted comms, and heavy-duty breaching tools.
"The main data hub Helena mentioned," Marcus whispered, leaning forward over the center console. "It’s located directly beneath the sub-basement. That's where Arthur stores the hard drives containing every transaction, every offshore account, and the physical deeds to your grandfather's trust. If we wipe those servers, Arthur loses his entire empire in thirty seconds."
Julian nodded, opening his door quietly. The damp night air filled his lungs. "And Clara?"
"She stays here with me," Helena said immediately, her tone non-negotiable. "I'll keep her safe in the vehicle. If we aren't back by dawn, take the emergency sat-phone and cross the Canadian border."
Julian met Helena’s gaze in the dim interior light. For a brief second, twelve years of grief, anger, and separation melted away into an unspoken understanding. He reached out, gently touching her hand. "We'll both be back."
With that, Julian and Marcus slipped out of the SUV, melting into the dense shadows of the estate gardens like ghosts. They moved with practiced precision, hugging the stone walls of the mansion until they reached the heavy metal service door leading down to the sub-basement—the exact door shown in the manila envelope's first photograph.
The heavy iron padlock was gone, replaced by a modern digital keypad glowing with a faint blue light. Marcus stepped up to the panel, pulling a small electronic device from his jacket and plugging it into the emergency diagnostic port.
"Give me ten seconds," Marcus muttered, his fingers flying across the tiny screen.
May you like
Suddenly, the keypad flashed green with a soft chime. The heavy steel door clicked open, revealing a pitch-black concrete stairwell leading down into the bowels of the estate. But as Julian reached out to push the door open, the security light above them flickered, and a cold, familiar voice echoed from the darkness inside.
"I wondered how long it would take you to crawl back home, Julian."
