Chapter 13

The heavy silence of the second-floor gallery felt suffocating. Eleanor stood framed in the doorway of her private study, the amber light glinting off her blonde hair and the crystal wine glass in her hand. She didn't look like a cornered conspirator; she looked like an aristocrat watching a peasant stumble through a maze she had designed for his amusement.
Julian didn't hesitate this time. He closed the distance between them in three rapid strides, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist, forcing the wine glass from her hand. It shattered against the polished marble floor, sending shards of crystal and dark liquid splashing across their shoes—a mirror image of the violence that had started this entire war back at the dining table.
Eleanor gasped, her calculated composure finally cracking as Julian twisted her arm back just enough to press her against the wood-paneled wall.
"The master key, Eleanor. Now," Julian snarled, his face inches from hers, his bruised eye dark and menacing.
Eleanor’s eyes darted toward the mahogany desk inside her study, where a heavy gold-plated hardware token sat plugged into a secure terminal. "You're too late, Julian," she spat, a defiant sneer twisting her lips. "Even if you get the key, the server purge is already at thirty seconds. The state owns Clara's trust. You've got nothing left."
Julian shoved her roughly into the arms of the arriving Marcus, who had just bounded up the stairs behind him holding his portable diagnostic rig.
"Tie her up, keep her secured," Julian barked, sprinting past them into the study.
He slammed his hand onto the mahogany desk, yanking the gold hardware token out of the terminal. He grabbed the desk phone, hammering the intercom button that linked directly to Marcus’s rig in the sub-basement.
"Marcus! I got the token! What’s our status?" Julian shouted into the receiver.
Through the static, Marcus’s voice came back strained and frantic. "Ten seconds, Julian! Plug it into the local terminal right beside you and hit execute!"
Julian spun around. Next to the bookshelf was a secondary access port glowing a faint amber. He slammed the gold token into the slot. The monitor flashed red, demanding a biometric override.

Without thinking, Julian slammed his thumb onto the biometric scanner on the side of the terminal.
02... 01...
The screen flickered violently, turning from aggressive crimson to a steady, calming emerald green. A clean text prompt appeared: SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. DATA ARCHIVE SECURED.
Julian let out a ragged breath, leaning his hands against the edge of the desk as his entire body trembled with the sudden dissipation of adrenaline. The servers were saved. The evidence was locked. Arthur and Eleanor’s entire criminal empire was now safely archived on a secure drive under his absolute control.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway outside the study.
