Chapter 8: The Aftermath at Mercy General

While the police cruisers escorted Elena through the iron gates of the estate, miles away in the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridors of Mercy General Hospital, Clara was slowly waking from emergency surgery. The steady, rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor filled the private recovery room, accompanied by the gentle hiss of an oxygen cannula resting beneath her nose.

The surgical team had successfully repaired the laceration to her side, removing the remaining microscopic glass fragments and stitching the torn tissue with meticulous precision. Clara’s blonde hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, her face pale against the stark white hospital pillows. Her brother, David, sat in a vinyl chair beside the bed, his head bowed in quiet exhaustion, his fingers interlocked.

A soft knock sounded at the door frame, followed by the quiet entry of a police liaison officer holding a small digital recording device and a notepad. David looked up, standing immediately to block the officer’s advance.

""She just woke up ten minutes ago, Officer,"" David said, his voice low and protective. ""She’s not ready for a full interrogation yet.""

""I understand, Mr. Miller,"" the officer replied respectfully, keeping his voice gentle. ""We don't need a full statement tonight. I simply need to confirm receipt of the preliminary evidence package provided by Mr. Vance, and ensure Ms. Miller is aware that an arrest has already been made.""

Clara opened her eyes fully, the fog of anesthesia slowly parting. She turned her head slightly toward the officer, her voice coming out as a dry, raspy whisper. ""An arrest? Elena?""

""Yes, ma'am,"" the officer confirmed, stepping closer with a compassionate nod. ""Mr. Vance provided the high-definition server footage and the financial documents you brought to the house. Elena Vance is currently in custody downtown facing multiple felony charges.""

Clara closed her eyes for a long moment, letting out a slow, shuddering breath. The physical pain in her side flared briefly, a sharp reminder of the violence of the fall, but a profound sense of emotional weight lifted from her shoulders. For months, she had carried the burden of discovering the financial irregularities, working late nights in the corporate office to trace the missing funds through a maze of shell companies. The confrontation had been dangerous, but the truth was finally out in the open where it could no longer be hidden or manipulated.

""Thank you,"" Clara whispered, her hand resting gingerly over her bandaged side. ""I want to press full charges. No settlements, no deals.""

""Understood, Ms. Miller,"" the officer said, making a brief note on his pad. ""Rest now. The district attorney will be in touch once you've been discharged.""

As the officer quietly exited the room, David leaned down, gently squeezing his sister’s hand. ""It’s over, Clara. You’re safe now. Marcus did the right thing.""
