Chapter 4: The Digital Lock

The ambulance’s red and blue lights painted rhythmic geometric patterns across the high ceiling of the master hallway as it pulled away from the estate, its siren fading into the cool night air. Inside the house, the sudden absence of the medical crew left behind a heavy, hollow quiet. Only Marcus and Elena remained in the living room, surrounded by the debris of the shattered coffee table and the faint metallic tang of spilled blood.

Marcus stood by the ruined table, staring down at a single shard of glass that reflected the blinking red light of the ceiling camera. He did not look at Elena, who remained standing near the grand piano, her beige silk shirt slightly wrinkled from the evening's violent events.

""They took her to Mercy General,"" Marcus said, his voice flat and devoid of inflection. ""She’s in surgery. The laceration compromised a rib and came dangerously close to her pleural cavity.""

Elena swallowed hard, pulling the edges of her silk shirt closer together as if trying to shield herself from the freezing draft that seemed to emanate from Marcus himself. ""I didn't push her, Marcus. Not the way it looked. She came at me. She was hysterical.""

Marcus finally turned his head, his dark eyes boring into hers with a cold, analytical sharpness. ""Hysterical? Clara was calm when she arrived twenty minutes before I got home. I saw her car pull into the circular drive on my way back from the office. I watched her walk up the front steps through the perimeter app on my phone. She wasn't carrying a weapon, Elena. She was carrying a manila folder.""

Elena’s breath hitched. The manila folder. It had contained the printed email correspondence, the financial wire transfers, and the quiet correspondence between Elena and Clara’s estranged husband—documents that exposed Elena’s calculated campaign to systematically dismantle the company’s assets from the inside out while framing Clara for the financial discrepancies.

""Where is the folder?"" Elena asked before she could stop herself, the words slipping out in a moment of sheer tactical panic.

Marcus’s eyebrows arched slightly, a bitter, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. ""So there was a folder. You didn't mention a folder when you told me she attacked you out of nowhere."" He reached into his tuxedo jacket pocket and pulled out a slim, cream-colored envelope bearing the corporate seal, slightly smudged with a streak of dried blood. ""It was clutched in her hand when the glass broke. It’s covered in your fingerprints, Elena, and hers.""

The silence in the room became absolute. The trap had sprung, not with a dramatic roar, but with the quiet click of a digital archive unlocking. Marcus walked past her toward the hallway leading to the basement server room, his black tuxedo jacket swaying slightly with his steady stride.

""Where are you going?"" Elena whispered, her legs suddenly feeling weak beneath her.

May you like

""To pull the footage,"" Marcus replied without turning around. ""And then I’m calling the authorities back to file a complete report. Both for the assault, and for corporate fraud.""
