Chapter 2: The Weight of Evidence

The red light on the ceiling continued its steady, methodical blink, casting an eerie crimson pulse across the otherwise pristine white walls of the living room. Marcus remained frozen, his gaze locked upward on the security lens before slowly dropping back down to Elena, whose chest heaved beneath her fine silk shirt. The sheer implication of the camera’s unblinking mechanical eye hung over them like a guillotine blade.

Clara let out a low, agonizing moan from the floor, her fingers slipping slightly in the pool of crimson. The white robe was rapidly soaking through, the fabric turning a deep, dreadful shade of red. Despite the pain, Clara forced her head up, her blonde hair tangled across her forehead, her eyes fixing directly on Marcus with a look of desperate appeal. She tried to speak, but only a dry gasp escaped her pale lips.

""Don't move her,"" Marcus said tightly, his voice carrying an edge that brooked no argument. He didn't look at Elena as he spoke, his attention entirely split between the injured woman and the silent witness above them. He pulled a heavy silver smartphone from his tuxedo jacket, his thumb hovering over the screen. ""I’m calling emergency services. And then we are going to look at the footage, Elena. Every single second of it.""

Elena swallowed hard, her mouth tasting of dry ash. The panic that had initially fueled her defense began to curdle into a cold, calculated dread. The camera didn’t lie. It possessed no memory lapses, no bias, and no capacity for sympathy. It had captured the exact trajectory of Clara’s fall, the precise positioning of their hands, and the words spoken in the heated seconds before the glass shattered.

""Marcus, please, you have to understand,"" Elena began, stepping forward, her hand reaching out to touch his sleeve. Her fingers trembled against the black fabric of his tuxedo. ""She came here uninvited. She wouldn't listen to reason. She made threats.""

Marcus pulled his arm away sharply, his dark eyes flashing with a cold resentment that chilled Elena to the bone. ""Save it for the server, Elena. If what you say is true, the footage will clear you completely. If it doesn't..."" He didn't finish the sentence, but the implication was loud and clear. He dialed three digits on his phone, barking his home address to the dispatcher with crisp, authoritative precision, keeping his eyes locked on the bloody scene before him.

Clara closed her eyes, her head falling back against the carpet with a soft thud. Her breathing had grown shallower, the initial shock giving way to the dangerous onset of blood loss. The luxury of the modern living room now felt less like a home and more like a forensic crime scene, perfectly lit and endlessly documented. Marcus ended the call, slipping the phone back into his pocket as he knelt beside Clara, checking her pulse with practiced, steady fingers. Elena stood off to the side, completely isolated, watching the man she loved tend to the woman who threatened to destroy their entire world.
