Chapter 7: The Arrival of the Law

The heavy oak front doors of the estate groaned under a series of sharp, authoritative raps that reverberated through the sprawling mansion. Marcus remained seated in the study upstairs, staring out the dark window toward the front gates, where two marked police cruisers sat idling with their amber and blue light bars rotating silently in the cool night air.
Elena sat on the edge of the leather armchair across the room, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. The beige silk shirt she wore felt like a straitjacket. The frantic energy that had sustained her during the initial confrontation had completely evaporated, replaced by a dull, heavy numbness. She knew there was no escape, no clever legal maneuver, and no persuasive argument that could undo the digital trail Marcus had handed over to the authorities.
Footsteps approached the study door. Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a senior detective in a plain dark suit, entered the room without waiting for an invitation. The detective, a middle-aged man with sharp graying temples and tired eyes, held a standard plastic evidence bag containing the cream-colored manila folder covered in blood and fingerprints.
""Mr. Vance?"" the detective asked, looking past Elena toward Marcus.
Marcus stood up from his desk, buttoning the top button of his tuxedo jacket with deliberate care. ""Detective Vance. Yes, I'm Marcus Vance. My wife is Elena Vance."" He gestured toward the seated woman with a slight tilt of his head. ""The security footage and the financial documents are fully accessible on the primary server downstairs. My legal counsel has already authorized full data transfer to your department.""
The detective nodded slowly, his gaze shifting to Elena. ""Mrs. Vance, I am placing you under arrest on suspicion of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and reckless endangerment resulting in grievous bodily harm. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.""
Elena did not struggle. She did not scream, nor did she offer any protest. She simply stood up slowly, her movements robotic and mechanical, as the younger police officer stepped forward and cuffed her wrists with cold steel bracelets. The metal click sounded entirely too loud in the quiet study, echoing the earlier crash of the glass coffee table downstairs.
As they led her toward the double doors, Elena cast one final look back at Marcus. He stood by the window, his silhouette dark against the flashing emergency lights outside. He did not look back. His face was turned toward the glass, watching the reflection of his own ruined life rather than the woman he had shared a home with for five years.

The walk down the grand hallway felt interminable. Every painting, every polished marble floor tile, and every architectural detail seemed to mock her sudden downfall. She had risked everything for wealth and control, only to lose it all in a matter of minutes to an unblinking security camera and a shattered glass table.
