Chapter 6: The Unblinking Eye

On the monitor, the digital clock in the corner of the frame ticked forward in precise increments. The audio quality was startlingly pristine, capturing every intake of breath, every rustle of fabric, and every harsh syllable exchanged between the two women before the tragic fall.

""You think Marcus will believe you over his own business records?"" Clara’s voice echoed from the server room speakers, sounding sharp and completely controlled. On screen, Clara was holding the manila folder firmly against her chest, standing her ground near the sofa.

Elena on the monitor stepped forward aggressively, her hand lashing out not to defend herself, but to snatch the folder from Clara’s grip. ""He won't have to believe anything if these papers mysteriously disappear along with you,"" the recorded Elena hissed, her face twisted in a look of cold desperation that bore no resemblance to the panicked woman who had screamed for help moments later.

In the server room, Elena watched herself on screen, her hands trembling as she clutched the edges of her silk shirt. The absolute finality of the digital evidence struck her with crushing force. There was no editing the timeline, no claiming a glitch in the software, and no rewriting the sequence of physical actions that had led to Clara losing her balance and crashing backward through the fragile glass table.

Marcus stood motionless beside the monitor, his eyes fixed on the screen as the video showed Clara tripping over the decorative rug edge while trying to evade Elena’s lunging grasp, followed by the sickening crunch of safety glass shattering beneath her weight. The camera’s unblinking wide-angle lens captured every single horrifying detail without hesitation, bias, or mercy.

As the video reached the timestamp where Elena screamed ""Stop!"" and the subsequent arrival of Marcus himself through the double doors, Marcus pressed the pause button. The image froze on Clara’s bloodstained white robe and Elena’s raised, pointing finger.

""You lied to my face,"" Marcus said softly, his voice barely rising above the hum of the cooling fans. He turned to face her, his dark eyes hollow and completely detached. ""Not only did you embezzle company funds behind my back, but when confronted, you caused a violent altercation that nearly cost an innocent woman her life, and then you tried to frame her for assaulting you.""

""I was terrified, Marcus,"" Elena whispered, a tear finally escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. It was the first genuine tear of the entire evening, born not of tactical manipulation, but of complete, irrecoverable ruin. ""Everything was slipping away. The lifestyle, the company, our future. I made a terrible mistake, but I love you.""

May you like

""Love doesn't look like this, Elena,"" Marcus replied, his tone final. He unplugged the hardware security key from the terminal and slipped it into his pocket. ""And neither does marriage. The police are already reviewing the remote feed I streamed to my phone ten minutes ago. They’ll be back shortly to execute an arrest warrant for financial fraud and criminal endangerment.""
